Free Online Credit Scores

March 29th, 2008

Credit scores are scores that show a person’s financial creditworthiness. The credit score is used to verify whether the person qualifies for a loan, or any other credit, based on whether he has repaid his previous loans satisfactorily. In other words, a credit report is a reflection of the past credit history of an individual. Credit score is used by banks and other lending companies to estimate how risky the borrower is. It helps them to determine how much loan can be given and at what rate of interest. Credit scores are also sought by employers and landlords for determining the eligibility of the applicant.

In the US, the credit score is based on the FICO (Fair Isaac Corporation) score that is calculated by using certain mathematical and statistical techniques. There are also other versions of calculating credit scores such as Beacon and Empirica. A FICO score is based on various factors including: punctuality of payment in the past, capacity used (ratio of current revolving debt to total available revolving credit), length of credit history, types of credits used and recent credits obtained. FICO scores range from 300-850 wherein a score below 600 is considered “bad”, while a score above 720 is considered “good”. Every US citizen can obtain a credit report from a reporting agency as per the FACT Act (Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act).

Every person can get his/her credit report from each one of the credit bureaus: Experian, Equifax and TransUnion, once a year. All three reports can be ordered at the same time. A free report can also be obtained more than once within the same year in certain situations like if a person is on welfare, or if the report was inaccurate because of fraud, if the person is unemployed and is looking for a job. If a company takes adverse action against the applicant such as denying application for credit, insurance, or employment, one can ask for a report within 60 days of receiving notice of the action. There are also other companies that provide free credit scores and reports using their own tools and resources. They also provide other services such as free alerts about changes in the credit report, and advice about loan lenders and credit card companies that would provide credit suitable to the client’s credit score. However, the free offers are generally used to just attract people towards their other services. The free services are only for limited periods and usually require registration to their other paid services for accessing free credit scores.

Las Vegas Travel Planning: How to Save Money

March 29th, 2008

Las Vegas evokes visions of extravagant, exciting, colorful mega resorts; flashing neon lights; warm, desert weather; slot machines; showgirls; and fun. Las Vegas is no longer just about gambling. Today, Las Vegas has world-class restaurants, unique shopping, headliner entertainment, spas, golf, tennis, and elaborate pool complexes. If you’re planning on going to Las Vegas, here are some tips to save you money.

Package it
Las Vegas trip planning needn’t be difficult. Often the best prices are found by booking a package through a tour operator that includes roundtrip airfare, accommodations, and transportation to and from the airport all for one price. Often these packages feature charter flights, and are frequently non-stop flights. There’s something festive about a plane full of vacationers all headed for Vegas. Charter flights require a little flexibility, as they generally don’t operate every day, but the rewards can be savings of up to 40 percent.

Book Early; Book Late
The paradox of Las Vegas travel planning is that the best rates, almost always, go to those travelers who either book very early or very late. Tour operators, airlines, and hotels reward those who ante up their travel dollars early and help operators meet their booking goals. Conversely, they tend to panic within 21 days or so of departure, fearing they won’t be able to sell all their seats or rooms, and consequently slash prices dramatically. One example of this is the deep discounts offered via the Internet for travelers who can book on Wednesday and travel on Friday or Saturday. The catch to this, of course, is that not all cities are offered on any given week.

Take Advantage of the Freebies
Las Vegas is famous for its “comps.” You don’t have to be a high roller to qualify for freebies. Most casinos have some type of frequent player’s club. Don’t be shy. Sign up as soon as you arrive and make sure that you insert your card into the slot machine or show it to the pit boss for table play. Rewards can range from complimentary meals and gifts to free hotel nights.

Ask about coupon books when you make your reservation and when you check into the resort in Las Vegas. Many tour operators and most hotels offer a value book with two-for-one drink and meal specials, match play coupons, and other specials. Don’t leave this bet on the table.

Travel Off-Season
It’s hard to imagine that the thousands of hotel rooms in Las Vegas can all be full during certain times of the year, but they are. Las Vegas is one of the busiest convention destinations in the world. These mega-shows are held mostly from early spring through late autumn with a break during the hottest middle of the summer. Book your trip in early January or mid-July for a lower price.

Las Vegas trip planning needed be stressful. Online travel information, a good travel agent, and a little flexibility can go a long way to putting together a memorable and enjoyable trip to Las Vegas. Don’t delay. Get started on planning your trip today.

Great Christening and Baptism Keepsake Ideas

March 29th, 2008

A baby’s christening or baptism is a very special occasion. It is the very first step in their spiritual life so there should be as many keepsakes of the day as possible. Since the baby won’t have any first-hand memories of this special day, it’s up to the parents, godparents and family members to create lasting memories for them.

There are always the popular items that make treasured keepsakes, but there are many other ideas that might get overlooked. For instance, are the invitations just for inviting guests to the celebration and providing all the important details? That is their main purpose, but saving just one of them to be framed or placed in a memory album/scrapbook will create a lasting souvenir of the occasion.

Here is a list of some more obvious and not-so-obvious items that make great baptism or christening keepsakes creating lifetime memories for the baby.

  • Gown or Outfit - Choosing heirloom quality fabric and taking the proper storage measures will help preserve the gown or outfit for future generations or just for a lasting remembrance.
  • Accessories such as shoes, socks, bib, blanket, bonnet, towel, headband, boutonniere - They all add an extra special touch to the gown or outfit and make great mementos.
  • Favors - These are perfect for showing appreciation to guests and giving them a take-home token. Many types of favors can be personalized.
  • Certificate - This is a great way to create a written record of the baptism or christening that can be framed and displayed.
  • Bracelet - What could be more precious and beautiful than a baby bracelet adorning the infant on her special day?
  • Personalized Gifts - These are normally items designed specifically for a christening or baptism such as a photo album, photo frame, Bible, cross plaque, doll, prayer bear, or candle. They are extra special because of the personalization.
  • Share of Stock with Framed Certificate - This is a gift that will educate and grow with the child throughout their life and the personalized frame will commemorate the date of their baptism or christening.

Godparents, in particular, should really consider giving their godchild a keepsake gift since part of their responsibility is to help the child grow in their spirituality. Since their baptism or christening is the beginning of their spiritual life, it should always be remembered. There are special godchild, goddaughter, and godson gifts available that can be personalized with the baby’s name and the date.

Keepsakes are a wonderful way to honor the memory of a baby’s christening or baptism through the years as they grow, both physically and spiritually.

    I Deserve Better

    March 29th, 2008

Have you ever said those words to a partner or to yourself? It’s an important statement to make because it’s often the first step towards truly realising that ill treatment you have experienced is not a reflection of your value.

But that is all it is: a first step.

This week a woman spoke up in one of my domestic violence recovery workshops and said she was coming to terms with the break-up of her latest relationship. It hadn’t been as bad as previous relationships, she said. There had been no physical violence. But she had found herself emotionally ‘carrying’ this man. Over time the burden had become heavier and heavier.

And then, her face contorting with the difficulty of actually speaking the words, she added tremulously: “It sounds awful to say it, I know, but I deserve better.” Then she stopped expectantly, almost as if she was waiting for the sky to fall down on her, or the other women to hiss or throw their paper coffee cups at her.

Needless to say, it didn’t happen. They were probably thinking about how she had had to screw up her courage to speak those words.

At that point a connection that has been a long time coming clicked into place in my brain and I asked her if she would allow me to challenge her on that statement. She nodded bravely, but apprehensively. Had she been staking too high a claim to life’s riches?

I said: “I dispute the fact that you deserve better, Liz. You deserve the best.” The atmosphere in the room became electric.

Nobody deserves better. As unique, precious human beings who have made do with crumbs, while generously nurturing the other people in their life - every abused woman deserves the best.

Actually, I believe that every human being is deserving of the best that life has to offer; love, care, respect, consideration, far more than material goods. The key is to understand that this abundance can be freely available to all. Owning your own share does not reduce the amount that is available to all. It doesn’t mean depriving other people. Your abundance only increases the available store.

Deprivation occurs when you encounter those people who have, or believe they have, nothing to give; people who believe their best hope of attaining comfort is to cut off your source of supply and drain whatever resources you have.

Hence the question arises: Better than what? Better than the worst relationship you’ve had? Better than nothing? Better than the proverbial ‘burnt stick in the eye’?

How much better is better? How much better do you deserve things to be? 10%? 20%? 50%? And how soon can you claim the better life that you deserve? Now? Or does it have to be a long, slow, wearisome process? Is it yours for life, or can it be taken away from you again?

Liz sat blinking like an owl in strong light as she processed these ideas. What clinched it for her was realising that her deserving the best deprived nobody. Rather, since it meant that she would no longer be running on empty, she could share the generosity of her spirit even more constructively than she had in the past. (Not least because, from now on, she will steer clear of those people who would rather drain her resources than uncover the wellspring of their own.)

When Liz said: “I deserve the best”, she made no apologies for the statement she made. It sat well with her.

Because there is something far more compelling about speaking words out loud than just thinking them, I asked the other women to join in also. A chorus of “I deserve the best” filled the room.

That group of women who generally apologise for their existence had no problem declaring that they deserve the best.

Focusing on a modest improvement in their circumstances kept these women thinking small. It kept them focusing on doing just a little bit better than what they were used to doing.

Raising the bar unconditionally transported them into a different place; the place where their dreams, beliefs and values still grow. In that place they knew and felt that they deserve the best.

What about you? You deserve the best, don’t you? So why not just say it out loud to yourself a few times a day? It makes a great mantra. And you’ll never know how much more at peace with yourself you’ll feel until you give it a try.

    Ness Notes (May 22)

    March 29th, 2008

This year’s NBA conference semifinals have seen three of the four series go seven games (Heat beat the Nets in five games), after none of the four conference semis went past six games last year. Actually, it’s pretty unusual for this many series to go this long, so early in the playoffs.

My free play is on the Chi Cubs over the Fla Marlins at 7:05 ET. Coming off a perfect 3-0 sweep this weekend with my exclusive Las Vegas Insider plays (Spurs/Tigers/Pistons), I’m looking to improve my Las Vegas Insider record in MLB this May to 6-1 with another winner tonight. I also have a 15* Rivalry Classic Play on the Yankees/Red Sox game. In the NBA playoffs, I’m featuring a LEGEND Play (4-1 in TY’s postseason!) on one of tonight’s two Game 7s. Don’t miss it!

In fact, it’s just the third time it’s happened since Bird and Magic rejuvenated the league by entering the NBA in the 1979-80 season. The last time was in 1994 and the other was in 1981. There have been nine years (since 1980) in which none of the semifinals series were forced to a seventh game with three years standing out. In 1998 all four series went only five games (it also happened in 2002) and in 1999 there were three four-game sweeps and one six-game series.

Also of note in this year’s postseason has been the number of close games. Through two rounds last year (65 games), just one game was decided by just one point, four others by two points and five more in overtime. Through 69 games this year, eight games have been decided by one point (three in OT), six more by two points and five others in overtime. That’s quite a difference.

However, there was nothing close about the first of this year’s three semifinal round Game 7s yesterday. The Pistons beat the Cavs on Sunday by holding them to 23 points in the second half, in a 79-61 win. Detroit may have looked very vulnerable in the middle of this series (lost Games 3, 4 and 5) but they opened it and closed it strong. They won Game 1 by 27 points and Game 7 by 18!

Detroit is now 10-2 when facing elimination since the ‘03 playoffs and the Pistons have gone 12-1 in games in which they’ve had a chance to eliminate their opponent. That lone loss came in last year’s Game 7 of the NBA Finals. Speaking of Game 7s, home teams have now gone 77-17 in NBA playoff history.

There are two more Game 7s on tonight’s schedule and will that home team dominance continue? Home teams have been struggling as of late in this year’s playoffs, especially against the spread. After opening 30-9 SU, home teams ended the first round on a 1-5 SU and ATS run and have gone 15-9 SU (11-13 ATS) in the second round. That’s a 30-game run of 16-14 SU and just 12-18 ATS!

However, in two Game 7s this year, the home teams have won and covered easily. The Suns crushed the Lakers in the first round 121-90 in their Game 7 and the Pistons won easily yesterday. Tonight’s first Game 7 (both televised on TNT) is the Mavs/Spurs at 8:00 ET with San Antonio favored by 3 1/2 points (192). The second game is the Clippers/Suns at 10:30 ET with Phoenix favored by four points (215 1/2).

The Spurs have rallied in this series to win Games 5 and 6 and will try to become just the ninth team in NBA playoff history to overcome a 3-1 deficit and win a seven-game series. The Suns were the eighth team to do it, when they came back to beat the Lakers in this year’s first round. Jason Terry is back for the Mavs after his one-game suspension in Game 6.

In the night’s second game, the Clippers are playing in the franchise’s first-ever Game 7, while the Suns are playing in their second Game 7 in as many series. Neither team has been able to win consecutive games in this series, with the Suns taking Games 1, 3 and 5 and the Clippers winning Games 2, 4 and 6. The teams haven’t played since Thursday and conventional wisdom says that will help the Suns more.

‘Over players’ had been on quite a run in the postseason, as nine of the last 10 first round games went over and then 15 of the first 21 did the same in the second round, for a 24-7 run. However, all three of the games this past weekend (two on Friday plus yesterday’s game), went under the total.

Followers of the “Zig-Zag” theory have been streaking through this year’s playoffs, both ‘hot’ and ‘cold.’ They opened 19-8-2 ATS in the first round but closed on an 0-8 slide. They again opened strong in the second round, going 10-4 but have since gone 1-5 (now 11-9 in the second round). If not for the LA Clippers and Phoenix Suns (who are a perfect 5-0 in their series), it’s just 6-9 ATS in the second round.

    MLB notes

Interleague action is done for the month after a weekend of play that was highlighted by Barry Bonds getting his elusive 714th HR. The new week begins with the Cardinals owning MLB’s longest active winning streak at five straight games with the Devil Rays and Dodgers right behind them, having won four straight.

The Dodgers have won 12 of 15 and play in the only division in MLB (NL West) that doesn’t have a losing team. That’s interesting, as last year the Padres won that division with an 82-80 record. The Dodgers swept the Angels in a three-game series over the weekend and the team that played the White Sox in last year’s ALCS is now 17-27 on the year, having lost 17 of their last 22!

Losing has come easy to the Royals (10-31), who open the week with MLB’s longest active losing streak at nine straight (they are 2-20 on the road). The Marlins have lost seven straight games, ending a 10-game road trip 2-8. Florida (11-31) returns home tonight to host the Cubs but the bad news is the Marlins own MLB’s worst home record at 3-14.

The Marlins are the league’s biggest “moneyburners” at minus-$1628 (100/game), trailed by the Royals (minus-$1457), the 14-30 Pirates (minus-$1449) and the free-falling Angels (minus-$1227). The 29-14 Tigers are still MLB’s “best bet”, showing a profit of plus-$1539. The Rockies (25-19) are second-best at plus-$906 and it should be noted that these two teams are the biggest ‘under’ teams in MLB, going 14-26-3 and 15-26-3, respectively!

There are a “lucky 13″ games on tonight’s schedule, highlighted by the Yankees visiting Fenway Park to face the Red Sox at 7:05 ET on ESPN. It’s Wang versus Schilling, with the Red Sox favored at minus-$1.55 and a posted total of 9 1/2.

The Rapid Motor Vehicle-Is It Yours?

    March 29th, 2008

The Rapid Motor Vehicle Company was started in 1902 by Max Grabowski.

It was the manufacturer of some of the earliest trucks and was purchased in 1909 by GM. In 1912 the name GMC was first used at the New York Auto Show and in 1996 the suffix Truck was dropped.

What most people don’t know is that GMC also makes cars.

In 1902 Max Grabowski founded a company called the “Rapid Motor Vehicle Company”, which developed some of the earliest commercial trucks ever designed. In 1909 the company was bought by General Motors to form the basis of the General Motors Truck Company, from which GMC Truck was made. In 1912 the name “GMC Truck” was first shown at the New York Auto Show.

In 1996 GM dropped the word ‘truck’ from the GMC Truck name, thus creating the GMC name as we know it today. There never was a Grabowski Motor Company or a Grabowski Motor Corp.

They now make personal automobiles, as well as pickup truck and bus engines.

General Motors Corporation NYSE: GM, also known as GM, is a United States-based automobile maker with worldwide operations and brands including Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Daewoo, GMC, Holden, Hummer, Opel, Pontiac, Saturn, Saab, and Vauxhall Chevrolet and GMC divisions produce trucks, as well as passenger vehicles.

Other brands include ACDelco, Allison Transmission, and General Motors Electro-Motive Division that produces diesel-electric locomotives. GM also has stakes in Isuzu, Subaru, and Suzuki in Japan and a joint venture with AutoVAZ (Lada) in Russia. In December 2003, it acquired Delta in South Africa, in which it had taken a 45 percent stake in 1997, and which is now a fully-owned subsidiary, General Motors South Africa.

GM’s headquarters are in the Renaissance Center in Detroit, Michigan.

General Motors is the world’s largest vehicle manufacturer and employs over 340,000 people. In 2001, GM sold 8.5 million vehicles through all its branches. In 2002, GM sold 15 percent of all cars and trucks in the world. They also owned Electronic Data Systems from 1984 to 1996 which is a former Ross Perot company and, prior to selling it to News Corporation, DirecTV. GM owned Frigidaire from 1918 to 1979.

The current chairman (since May 1, 2003) and chief executive officer (since June 1, 2000) is Rick Wagoner, succeeding John F. Smith, Jr.

General Motors is selling its 20 percent stake in Fuji Heavy Industries, the parent of Subaru, in a deal that could raise more than $700 million as per news released on October 6, 2005.

Also, General Motors Canada auto workers voted on Sunday to ratify a new contract that will lay off 1,000 workers over the next three years, the Canadian Auto Workers and GM said.

General Motors lost 2.5 billion dollars last year, and would have made a profit if it was not saddled with 6 billion dollars in health costs.

The UAW and GM are now reaching agreement to reduce this health cost by about 1 billion dollars annually.

    High Blood Pressure

    March 28th, 2008

Blood pressure or hypertension is the pressure exerted by
the blood on the walls of the blood vessels. Blood pressure is
not static and varies from one heartbeat to another throughout
    the day.

The blood pressure is measured by a sphygmomanometer. At home,
you can measure your blood pressure by an electronic blood
pressure monitor. Two readings of the blood pressure in the
arteries during the cardiac cycle are taken. The peak pressure
is known as systolic pressure and the lowest pressure at
the resting phase of the cardiac cycle as the diastolic
    pressure
. Normal values for blood pressure readings of a
    resting healthy adult are:

Systolic Blood Pressure Read: between 90 and 135 mmHg

Diastolic Blood Pressure: between 50 and 90 mmHg

Average blood pressure for young people: 120/80
    mmHg
Blood pressure readings in the lower end of these
values are considered good for cardiovascular health.

High Blood Pressure When the arteries become obstructed
with plaque and cholesterol, they constrict making the
circulation of blood difficult. As a result, blood pressure
    becomes elevated.

A systolic blood pressure above 200 and diastolic blood
pressurea bove 120 mmHg is termed as severe hypertension.

The main causes of having high blood pressure are

Diet and lifestyle factors Hereditary High cholesterol Mental
    tension/stress/worries/fear/work pressure/competitive life Lack
of exercise/sedentary lifestyle Excessive consumption of common
salt, sugar and/or fat Nutritional deficiencies Overweight
    Smoking Excessive consumption of alcohol.

If you have high blood pressure, then lowering your blood
pressure will greatly reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke
and other illnesses. You can lower your blood pressure by having
a control over the factors causing it. The good news is that you
can improve all of the above causes, except hereditary. You need
not to take any blod pressure medication.

Gateway and Integrator - The Essential Catalysts for the VoIP Evolution

    March 28th, 2008

Compelling businesses cases are hard to come by. Quality and security is the subject of FUD. Perhaps most importantly, those enterprises that are forward thinking enough to appreciate the operational benefits of IP, have quite recently implemented advanced TDM solutions that are bridged with their contact management systems. These investments still have a distance to travel before they can be written off.

Nevertheless, the perceived industry wisdom supported by analyst predictions and all the research data recently collected points toward the day when all enterprises will implement a VoIP solution. The argument for a single network infrastructure to carry all company data - voice, data and video - is logical and compelling. The savings available from bypassing the line rental and call costs of PSTN can run into millions per annum in certain circumstances. The technology is proven to work out of the box and daily we read about (and implement) innovations that raise the bar of the quality and certainty of VoIP to the point where it is indiscernible from that provided by the PSTN.

The reality is that no transport technology ever replaced another over night - be that technology to carry people, goods or electrically generated signals. (Stevenson’s Rocket first carried rail passengers in the UK 1829. The last operational stagecoach in the UK - Minehead to Lynton - plied its trade in 1926.) Transport technologies evolve and have always relied on a handover point, or a gateway, to provide the user with the benefits of both old and new at the most appropriate point. That point is determined by cost, as are most evolutions in human endeavour. By the same argument, the VoIP gateway is an essential element of the evolution from traditional TDM voice systems to VoIP solutions.

Hardware manufactures, the PBX companies’ notable among them, depend on new product lines to guarantee their futures. In line with industry wisdom and predictions, the next range of PBX product is a VoIP solution with the essential PSTN gateway that beg the customers to make the big leap to VoIP. Yet as we have seen, there are some significant barriers to this leap. Therefore, the reseller channel has to look at ways to enable the leap and to sustain revenue streams while their customers sum up the courage to make it.

This is the role of the independent VoIP gateway. It enables a blend of VoIP and traditional telephony on a single implementation and with VegaStream’s advanced dial planner capability; the user experience will not change at all. The gateway enables enterprises to leverage their investment in inter-site private IP networks to carry voice without changing their current phone systems. The gateway enables remote workers to directly connect over the ubiquitous broadband IP network to the company PBX system. And with the co-deployment of Proxy servers, the gateway enables road warriors to be “in the office” wherever they can connect their SIP devices to the Internet.

Earlier in this piece it was mentioned that VoIP technology is proven to work “out of the box”. This is the case in the show room; on the exhibition floor and in the controlled environment of the enterprise WAN. However real world implementations involve third party PBXs and desk top devices (and the myriad of TDM signalling protocols deployed), the specific technologies of wide area bearer circuits, SIP or H323 IP protocols, interface and access to PSTN for emergency service calls (as a minimum) and a real understanding of the needs and business drivers of the customer. This is the domain of the specialist communications systems integrator.

VegaStream has spent the last eight years perfecting VoIP gateway technology in the lab and with enterprise and carrier customers. While we continue to evolve new solutions to tackle issues such as security and audio quality and to build the stack of signalling protocol interfaces, the company is now focussing its energy on transferring skills to specialist communications systems integrators. These skills will enable identification, proposal and successful implementation of blended TDM and VoIP solutions - the essential catalyst for the evolution to the next generation of converged communications.

Formed in 1998, VegaStream is one of the most experienced players in the industrial VoIP market. The company supplies gateway CPE to both traditional telecommunications carriers and the new generation of Internet telephony service providers. VegaStream also serves the enterprise market through a global network of distributors and resellers supported by regional offices in the UK, USA and Australia. VegaStream is a non-listed UK company. One-Piece Bathing Suits

    March 28th, 2008

There are different types, styles, designs and variants of one-piece bathing suits such as monokinis, string bodies, sling bikinis, and halter-necks. Most of them are modifications of the two-piece Bikini bathing suit that came out in the 1940s. New styles of one-piece bathing suits are still growing in popularity.

Possibly the most common form of one-piece bathing suit is the tank suit. The term “tank” evolved from “swimming tank” - the old name for swimming pool. The tank suit has given way to the development of the ever popular tank top, and the tankini - a bathing suit consisting of a tank top and the bottom piece of the bikini.

Another popular one-piece bathing suit is the sling bikini. It has side straps that extend upwards to cover women’s chests, which then stretch over their shoulders and reach down the back to form a thong. The entire sides of the torso are revealed this way. So the sling bikini becomes a very convenient bathing suit by combining two elements (the top and the bottom pieces) into one.

The monokini was designed by an Austrian named Rudi Gernreich in 1967. It is a one-piece, topless bathing suit for women consisting of only the lower piece of the bikini. Gernreich took the term from “mono”-indicating single or one, and is another variant of the original two-piece bikini bathing suit. The term may also be used to refer to other one-piece swimsuits such as a sling bikini.

Other forms of one-piece bathing suits for women include string bodys, halter-necks, maillots, tank suits, plunge fronts and pretzel suits.
