Leadership: The Critical Difference

April 30th, 2008

The main characteristic of all successful team-sports, religious, political parties, or business is that they have a good leader. Everything rises and falls on leadership.

When we speak of leaders and leadership, we tend to think of celebrities or famous people but we all have the capacity to lead and therefore are leaders in our own right. Leadership is influence and every single day, whether positively or negatively we are influencing another human being. If you are coaching little league, if you are influencing 3 or 4 people on the job or even your clients you are a leader. This important work not just because that’s how you make a living but because you are influencing another person’s life. As a leader you bring purpose and value to people’s lives.

We are all leaders.

Because we all have the ability to influence another person, it means we are all leadership in our own right. If you want to grow your organization, you have to grow your capacity to lead. You do that by learning, By practicing and developing the traits that make good leader you can grow your capacity to lead and thus grow your team.

Here are some of the traits that make a good leader:

Leaders are dreamers.

They have great personal vision and by extension they have a great vision for the team.

They understand that People are not motivated by small dreams and so they paint a huge challenging view of the future for their followers. In this way it is not easy to achieve and it forces the team to come out of its comfort zone and inspires them to stretch beyond its limitation.

Communication

The art of communication is the language of leadership. The leader has to be able to communicate the vision with passion. Not just from the intellectual head side but also from the emotional heart side. It is a fact that once people get emotional about where they are going then they start to eliminate some of restrictions they have in their minds.

Good communication is the ability to listen intently and to ask questions in order to deepen understanding and strengthen understanding. It is also being courteous and appreciative not just to clients but to employees as well.

Participation

The traditional way of thinking is that leaders must always be aloof. There had to be a gap between them and the team and that he or she never do any of the little things that would help the team to achieve its goal. That was seen as a sign of weakness. On the contrary I believe that that denotes power, for only a strong, powerful person would even consider giving up power but in so doing empowered those around him and in essence made the team far more effective and far more likely to reach if not supercede its goals.

A leader who gives of himself selflessly and helps others to explore their full potential and reach the pinnacle of their own power creates an environment where everyone is enriched by the accumulation and the magnitude of talents. True power is the art of making other people powerful and one of the sure fire sign of a good leader is that he develops other leaders.

Integrity

Leaders need to have an internal guidance system, a moral compass, that I call integrity. The three qualities I just discussed can be taught but integrity is something that has to be ingrained in a persons make up over a lifetime of development. It is what separates a good leader from a great leader

Leaders of integrity hone organizations that are ethical in all they do which in turn attract good honest people who reflect the organization and in turn attract more clients. People want to be led by someone who maintains the highest ethical standards, not someone who is likely to cheat or deceive them or other. Unfortunately, we live in a world where lack of integrity is the name of the game proving to be quite costly to the team over the long haul. Simply reflect on the news coming out of the corporate world in recent years and you’ll see what I mean.

Although I defined leadership as influence note that to be a good leader is to be a person of good character. It is impossible to positively influence another person with flawed character. Developing the traits we discussed will ensure that your not only a good leader of others but of your self.

Testing Diode-The Accurate Way on How to Test Semiconductor Diode Using Multimeter

April 30th, 2008

Testing diodes is different from testing a resistor because you
need a skill to do it. If you do not know or wrongly test a
diode you will be unable to repair the equipment. A bad diode
you think it is good. This will definitely waste your precious
time.

A rectifier diode can fail in one of the four ways. It can
become: -Open -Shorted -Leaky -Breakdown when in full operating
voltage An analog multimeter or digital multimeter can be used
to check for all the first three conditions except the last one
where the diode breakdown in full operating voltage. From my of
experienced in the electronic repairing line, i found that
checking diode using analog multimeter is more accurate than
using a digital multimeter. I could explain to you why i
preferred analog meter. I do not know about you because i really
came across quite a number of diodes where it checked ok using
digital multimeter but failed when test with analog meter.

The first step on how to test a diode is to remove one of the
diode lead. You can’t always be certain if a diode is good or
bad if you perform in-circuit test, because of back circuits
through other components. To be absolutely sure, you will need
to lift, or disconnect, one diode lead from the circuit to avoid
back circuits. Unless you are very sure about the board you are
checking. Sometimes i do found bad diodes when checking it on
board. Your experienced will tell you when to check a diode
on-board or off-board. If you are new to electronic repair, i
highly recommend that you check a diode with a lead removed from
the board.

I will set my analog meter to x1 ohms to check for current diode
leakage reverse and forward testing. Connecting the black probe
of your meter to the cathode and red probe to the anode, the
diode is reverse biased and should look like an open reading.
Connecting the red probe of your meter to the cathode and black
probe to the anode, the diode is forward biased and the meter
should read some value of resistance. If you have two readings
then most probably the diode is shorted or leaky and you should
replace it. If you don’t get any reading either forward or
reverse bias, the diode is considered open.

The real problem when checking a diode using the diode test
function of a digital meter is that an open or leaky diode, the
meter sometimes reads ok(0.6). This is due to digital meter
diode test output voltage (which you can measure the output test
probe using another meter) is around 500mv to 2v. An analog
meter set to x1 ohms have output about 3V(remember the two 1.5V
battery you installed in the meter!). The 3V voltage is enough
to show you the accurate reading of a diode when under test.

Even if you have a good reading at x1 ohms doesn’t mean that the
diode is good . You now have to set your meter to x10K to test
the diode again. The output voltage of x10k ohms is about
12V(remember the 9v battery in your meter-1.5v+1.5v+9v=12v).
Again the diode under test should show only one reading. This is
exception to Schottky diode where it have two readings but not
shorted reading. If the meter showed one reading then the diode
under test is good. If it has two readings then most probably
the diode is either shorted or leaky. The digital meter can’t
test it because the output from the meter is only 500mv to 2V.

If a diode breakdown when under full operating voltage, there is
no way to testing diode (unless you have a very expensive diode
checker which specially designed to locate this type of
problem).Substituting with a known good diode is often the only
way to prove that an intermittent diode is causing a particular
problem. Sometimes an intermittent diode could be locate using a
coolant spray.

Caution: Be certain that power is removed from any circuit
before performing any of the following diode checks, otherwise
meter or circuit damage could result.

Conclusion-In order to correctly test diode function you need to
set the analog meter to x1 ohms and x10K ohms range.

Should I Start My Own Business?

Should I Start My Own Business?

By: je Dunn

This is probably the most over looked basic question that a
person considering starting a business should ask himself or
herself. You should sit down and make a list of the advantages
having your own business would bring, and also what skills do
you bring to the table that makes you think that you can
successfully run your own business.

In this section I am going to lay some tough love on you. This
is not meant to discourage you just to better prepare you for
the realities that await you when you hang your, “Open For
Business” sign. The business world truly is a jungle.

Survival of the fittest is the law of the land. There are wolves
in sheep’s clothing waiting to prey on inexperienced
entrepreneurs at every bend in the road. Not to mention the
lions, tigers, and bears oh my how can a new business person
survive?

Your best weapon to carry when entering the wild, wild world of
business is knowledge.

When we decide to start our own business we tent to get all
fired up.

Our emotions get the best of us and we get carried away musing
the possibilities of our future financial freedom.

We are so excited to get the project up and running that we
start spending money on all the things we are going need for our
new successful business.

Maybe you buy a desk, a computer, get business cards printed,
maybe a fax machine, a business phone number, you pay to
register your business name and get a federal tax ID number wow!

This is all new cool and exciting but what about the boring
stuff. Things like writing a business plan, researching your
niche market, putting your goals down on paper. Yuck!

One of the key elements of a successful small businessperson is
the willingness to do the unglamorous tasks that running your
own business requires every day. Whether it is making sales
calls, writing letters, submitting articles, tracking ad
results. These repetitive tasks are the backbone of your
business.

To run a home business you must be prepared to wear many hats.
You will be the CEO, the CFO, head of R&D, sales manager,
accountant, secretary, and janitor, plus many other titles that
are necessary to make it all happen every day. You will be, “The
Man” or “The Woman” as the case may be. Do you really want that?
Are you prepared to accept all that responsibility? If the word
YES did not jump into your head STOP, before you invest any of
your time or money.

Owning your own business can be a very rewarding experience. If
you prepare yourself with the realities of what running your
business will entail the chances for your success will greatly
increase. I remember reading an article on the blues legend BB
King.

In the article the interviewer stated to BB that it must be
great to make a lot of money doing what you love, and having all
those fans around wherever you go. BB’s reply can be applied to
any business. BB said it only took me twenty years to be an over
night success.

When you look at a business that is successful today there has
been possibly years of trial and error behind the scenes. Most
of the time we only see the finished product and try to emulate
it without realizing what it took to get that business to that
point.

When our business fails to achieve the same level of success in
an unrealistic time frame people give up and jump into another
venture.

Do you want to know why only a few people ever make it with
their own business? They start a business doing what they love
to do.

Just like BB King, if he didn’t love what he was doing do you
think he could have stuck it out through twenty years of
terrible money and poor working conditions?

If you start a business doing something that you are passionate
about, that you enjoy, that alone can get you through the lean
times.

Add realistic expectations and a willingness to continue to
learn and seek help for the aspects of your business that you
are not great at, in a few years you could be an over night
success.

Customer Service - Will Your Customers Keep Coming Back?

April 30th, 2008

It is the level of customer service provided by a business which dictates whether we come back to buy more or vow never to return. I recently had an experience which is a perfect example of this:

My partner and I decided to check out a new café which is marketing itself on the quality of its food and drink. As we walked through the door we noticed that the opening hours indicated the place should have closed half an hour before. My partner asked a waitress if they were about to close. She looked confused and said she would have to ask her colleague. A few minutes later her colleague rushed past us without acknowledgement and began banging about with the coffee machine. After a few moments, when she had neither spoken nor looked at us, we took our leave, despite having made a special trip to get there. Do you think we are likely to return?

The International Customer Service Institute polled 20,000 people who had chosen not to go back to a business. 32% had not returned for a wide variety of reasons ranging from moving from the area to preferring a competitor.

A massive 68%, however, had decided to take their custom elsewhere simply because of the indifference of an employee they had dealt with. Just one negative contact can send your customers elsewhere, never to return.

A high level of customer service is essential to ensure both the long-term health and reputation of your business and your own job satisfaction. In my article ‘Customer Service - the Best Way to Deal with Customers’ I look at the choices we have in our daily encounters with our customers and clients.

Caribbean

April 28th, 2008

You’ve worked hard all year and you finally have time to rest. Treat yourself to a piece of paradise by going on a trip to the Caribbean! Snorkel, go boating, hike, or just relax in the sprawling beaches - you can do absolutely anything you want.

The Caribbean has been a favorite vacation spot of tourists from the world over. In fact, millions of people visit the islands from the United States alone. The charm of the Caribbean lies not just on its beautiful beaches and romantic sunsets - it also has a rich history and a colorful culture that truly makes it addictive.

Also known as the West Indies, the Caribbean group of islands is actually located in the perimeter of the Caribbean Sea, very near the South American countries of Mexico and Venezuela. The Caribbean is composed of about 7,000 islands, each differing in size. The islands are grouped into the Greater Antilles, Lesser Antilles, and the Bahamas.

Christopher Columbus discovered the Caribbean centuries ago by accident, as he was trying to reach Southeast Asia (that’s how the Caribbean got its West Indies name). It was then occupied by an Amerindian group called the “Carib”; this the name “Caribbean.” The region was once very famous for its legendary sea pirates.

Now, most of the different Caribbean islands belong to the independent South American countries, but some are still part of the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, France, or the United States.

Caribbean hotels and resorts are usually fully booked during peak season, so it is advisable to take care of your accommodations at least three months in advance. If you want more privacy, visit the less popular islands that offer the same first-rate accommodations. It’s not a good idea to visit the Caribbean from April to December, though, as these are hurricane months. If you still want to go during this period, always check for weather updates.

Caribbean provides detailed information on Caribbean, Caribbean Islands, Caribbean Cruises, Caribbean Vacation and more. Caribbean is affiliated with All Inclusive Caribbean Vacations.

Resist the Urge to Diagnose Yourself

April 28th, 2008

There is a wealth of information available nowadays. The Physician’s Desk Reference is available in bookstores, as are drug references - both for professionals and lay people. Looking for ways to read about your symptoms, and the possible causes thereof is a very short expedition. And finding potential diagnoses is very easy. Understanding them, however, is another story entirely. The books written for doctors are for doctors - meaning they expect a certain level of knowledge and write to that expectation. The information compiled in books written towards laypeople may not be complete, because they are not able to convey as much without using more technical language.

There is a reason why you need professionals in your life whom you trust completely. With them there, you are able to go to them when you need something or have a question, as opposed to looking for the answers yourself. When you start looking on your own, you are more likely to come up with a worst case scenario first, not necessarily seeing the more common and less troubling reality. Or you might blow your symptoms out of proportion, putting more emphasis on a more minor problem. It is very easy to see things that are not there, and look for ways to find symptoms for diseases. You can convince yourself that the worst is happening, when in reality you are fine. It’s an easy temptation to look for what is wrong with you. But by doing that, you can just get yourself in more trouble, and that doesn’t help anyone.

How to Build Volunteer Teams with New People: The Five I’s

April 27th, 2008

The Five I’s are a simple way to remember how to look for new
volunteers to build your serving teams. Follow this process and
you can, over time, build a strong body of serving teams in your
church.

These simple five steps are: 1. Identify 2. Introduce 3. Inquire
4. Inform 5. Involve

Identify–Find somebody

You have to identify who you believe would be suitable for the
serving task you are looking to fill. Typically, this will be
someone you don’t know, and someone who is alone or whose family
tends to stay by themselves. Look for someone who appears
nervous or looking around your church. Don’t forget those rare
people who ask to be connected, and anyone who is attending a
medium-sized group activity.

Introduce–Make contact

If you do not know them personally, you must make contact! It
sounds simple but is often overlooked. Most people won’t jump
out and volunteer automatically. Smile and say hello. Briefly
tell them your name and what your level of involvement is at the
church and how long you have been coming to the church. Then
flow immediately into the next step.

Inquire–Ask about them

This must be done on contacting new people first. You must ask
if you can serve them in any way. If it is their first time or
first few times to the church and no one has approached them,
the chances are high that they came to church looking for some
help–so be ready to help them!

Your next step is to ask if they would like to serve others–ask
about their desire! Do they want to serve in some capacity? Are
they looking to get involved? Do they know about their gifts and
about their passions? Use the answers to these questions to help
connect them to others in your church community.

Inform–Tell about opportunities

The first step is to be knowledgeable about church serving
opportunities. Make sure you have a good handle on what needs to
be done (it sure doesn’t hurt to have such opportunities written
down in the weekly church bulletin!). Through questions, find
something that they have interest in doing and introduce them to
a leader in that area.

Involve–Direct them toward growth

Do not leave the new person until a “set thing” is confirmed. A
“set thing” is a follow-up time–a connection with another
church servant-leader or team member that agrees to help–where
an opportunity to learn about a particular serving ministry is
set up.

Use these Five I’s and continue to grow your ministry through
volunteer serving teams!

Arthritis Pain Relief

April 26th, 2008

There are many types of arthritis pain relief, of course the most common one is prescribed and over the counter drugs. These can work very well in helping to keep the pain under control and giving you a break from any associated arthritic conditions. Your doctor is the best person to advise you on what over the counter drugs will work best for you and are most likely to be a lasting solution to the pain caused by your arthritis flare ups. Unfortunately right now there is no known cure for arthritis, but a good treatment can help you to manage the pain better.

If you don’t like the idea of taking any drugs, but would like to stay with standard medicine, then you can try Tens to see if it works on your arthritis pain and symptoms. The correct name for this is transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, so you can probably understand why the medical community abbreviated it. Tens is actually a small electrical pain reliever that sends light electric shocks through the nerves so that the pain messages are interrupted. Although not quite as effective as some drugs, this can still be a very good way to control your arthritis pain without having to take any arthritis pain relief drugs.

One of the best and some people say most effective form of arthritis pain relief is to eat well and adopt a healthy way of living. A lot of patients believe that a good diet can help with the arthritis pain and prevent the disease progressing rapidly and rather quickly. A lot of doctors also provide support by agreeing that their patient’s diet can have a beneficial effect on their arthritis pain symptoms. Exercise can also be a good deterrent to pain as a result of arthritis, although you will need to consult with your doctor or arthritis specialist in order to find out what the best exercise is for you and your arthritis condition. Often you will need to just take a gentle walk every day or perform some light stretching on a daily basis. Your doctor should be able to help you develop an exercise plan to follow that will help to relieve you of any arthritis pain while preventing you from causing any further harm to yourself or aggravating your current condition.

Arthritis pain relief can take many different forms and truthfully the best way to find out which is the most suitable form for you is to ask your doctor. Your medical specialist can give you the best information on the treatments available so that you can decide which you would like to try in order to relieve your arthritis pain. Remember, before you try any new treatments for your arthritis symptoms it is always a good idea to ask your doctor whether it is a good treatment and likely to help your current condition.

TURN ANY HOBBY INTO A PART-TIME BUSINESS

April 26th, 2008

If you are planning on beginning a business, your best bet is
to start out part-time while you are still earning a full-time
income at your present job.

If you are like most people who are existing from payday to
payday, you don’t have a lot of money to invest in a full-time
business. No need to worry! Just use your favorite hobby as your
business base and grow from there!

There’s no telling where you’ll be at 2 or 3 years down the
road. Perhaps you can even tell your present boss to “take that
job and shove it.” Wouldn’t that be great?

Using your present hobby or favorite pastime as your business
base has many benefits. Why? Because ANY business you decide to
become involved in should be doing something you LOVE, something
you believe in, something that you would work at NO MATTER what
income it would generate.

This will give you the stamina to see your business through the
beginning hard times and times when there is more work to do
than you can handle. We all know the feeling of doing a job that
we hate to do.

With jobs we dislike there is no way we can give it 110% of our
abilities because we procrastinate getting through it and just
want to get it over with. That’s why it is vitally important to
dearly love the product or service you have chosen to build your
business around.

Do you like cooking? Start a recipe newsletter for others who
like the same thing and sell your recipes by publishing a simple
booklet. Do you enjoy making crafts? Sell them online. (be sure
and mark up the price for shipping and handling).

Do you enjoy writing? Write a small booklet or how-to manual and
sell it as an ebook. Do you enjoy computer programming? Write a
program and sell through shareware groups or even thru your own
affiliate program.

Just about anything you love doing can be magically transformed
into a business opportunity for you. Start educating yourself by
reading and researching other home-based businesses.

Businesses that claim to put you in business overnight should
never demand a large amount of money from you. On the contrary,
legitimate businesses have nothing to hide and should invite you
to learn the “whole” story behind their claims.

Another good move on your part is to invest a little time in
online business forums. Many are free, and the valuable
information you obtain from actual people who are in business is
something that will be extremely valuable to your education.

Yes - it’s that easy! Of course, this is only the beginning. As
with any hobby, it will take time to realize a profit but think
of it this way: Most people that have a hobby know they have to
spend money to take part in their hobby. It only makes sense to
invest money in advertising your hobby to others so you can
eventually make some of that money back in sales for your own
business!
