Running After 50 - My Story

April 26th, 2008

I took up running in my late 40s after looking hard and long at a picture taken in New York City during a family vacation, a picture in which I truly did not like the way I looked.

Out of shape. Tired. Overweight. Neglected. Dark rings under the eyes. No juice. And that big belly which I didn’t notice before… hmmm…

Clearly, dieting and exercise was the only way out. But dieting has never been something I was very successful at. So that left me with the only other option available - exercising.

But what kind of an exercise? I felt too old for a lot options and almost for all team sports. I didn’t have too much spare time either.

It had to be something that I could start doing right away without much preparation or driving around and would then allow me get back to my daily routine with the same ease.

As I was meditating on the issue, as luck would have it and as it usually happens by divine arrangement in situations like this, my eyes happened to fall on this very elderly gentlemen, easily in his 70s and perhaps even more, RUNNING past my window with a stilted but comfortable gait!

I pressed my nose to the glass to take a second look just to make sure I wasn’t hallucinating or anything.

Nope, the white haired gentleman was slowly but surely inching his way up the street where I lived, looking smart in his great looking sweat shirt and pants and matching jogging shoes.

I was embarrassed in a way. If this guy could run in that very advanced age, what excuse did I have for self-pity and inaction?

So that very same evening I did what I always do before embarking on a new project - I hit the bookstore.

While perusing the racks of books and magazines I found what I needed. The latest issue of the Runner’s World magazine which had a 10 week startup program for the absolute new beginners. I checked it out while still standing there in front of the magazine rack - it was built around a “walk 2 minutes and then run for 2 minutes for a total 10 minutes” type of idea.

Certain that I could walk and run in 2 minute intervals, I purchased the magazine right there on the spot.

While driving back home I almost ran a red light because in my mind I was already off and running like a cheetah up and down gorgeous hills and mountains and across all over God’s green earth. Boy, was I ready for some glory.

The next morning, with my old plastic watch strapped to my right wrist, and wearing my almost brand spanking new running shorts and jogging shoes, I was out in front of my house, feeling really nervous and excited like a little kid about to join a new game.

The first 100 yards I thought I was doing fine until I was stopped in my tracks with an excruciating pain that stabbed me on the side. And that was the end of my first “run.” I walked back home holding my side and cussing at myself for failing in my grandiose “becoming a runner” project.

Was this for me really? Was I going to be able to run, ever, for 2 MINUTES straight for god’s sake?!

The next morning I did not feel any better when I saw the same old gentleman cruising past my house, this time in an even better-looking jogging outfit.

In ten minutes I was out again, making it past the 100-yards mark and welcoming the familiar side-stab at about 200 yards. But I felt I was doing it. At long last, yes, I was exercising, one killer side-stitch at a time.

Let’s fast forward to a year later…

My runs were now always over the 30 minute mark and I was running like 3 or sometimes even 4 times a week. I was feeling great, lost some weight (not a lot though) but in general I was really feeling charged the way someone throws off a switch in a dark room and turns on the lights. The sensation of renewal was really remarkable. The fact that my wife also commented on how better I looked and how she was also inspired herself by my new routine made the rewards even sweeter.

Since then running became truly an addiction for me. I can now run for over an hour at a slow comfortable pace and easily do four or five miles at a stretch. When I feel rested and especially energized, like perhaps once every other week, I also combine some after-run sit ups and bicycle-kick crunches for some extra conditioning.

Within the past few years I’ve even participated in a 5K and 10K race with mediocre times nothing to write home about (33″ and 72″, respectively). But I feel peaceful, strong and about 20 pounds lighter. I know I probably have another 20 pounds to go but it is a process. An up and down process that I’ve learned to manage.

Some days I feel tired and ragged, and I’ve learned how not to force myself on days like that because, thanks god, my body does not care for my ego.

I’ve learned to respect my limits and not to injure myself. So I never got injured so far, knock on wood.

On those magical and rare days when I feel this inexplicable energy roaring out of nowhere in the third mile of a 5 mile run, I’ve learned to let it rip and open up downhill like a child while praying inward that my knees would hold up and not let me down for one more day.

I’ve learned to appreciate the beauty of running and all runners young and old, fast and slow. I’ve learned the proper form to run efficiently and how not to be arrogant when I saw fellow runners with bad-form, and how not to be upset when those same runners with bad-forms easily left me reeling in their dust.

I know what a privilege and blessing it is to be able to run. I cherish it with an almost religious reverence. I’m truly grateful. I remember all those who cannot run even if they wanted to for one reason or another and I send them all my heartfelt silent prayers. I hope they are accepted.

If you are already a runner, I’m sure you’re already familiar with my experience. And if you are not, first of all let me slip in the obligatory caution that I’m not a doctor and I strongly recommend you see your doctor before undertaking any exercise program, including running.

But having said that, I heartily recommend running for everyone, within their own limits and capacity. Take it very easy at first. Walk a minute, and then “run” for 30 seconds, if you need to. There’s nothing wrong with that. Who said you need to run like Alberto Salazar as soon as your New Balances hit the ground?

It’s all about circulation and sweating out the toxins. I think running is unique in revving up our circulation to its maximum and that’s why it’s got so many health and psychological benefits. But that deserves another article of its own.

Do it and you’ll like it. And the more you like it, the more you end up doing it, no matter how old you are. That’s how this positive addiction grows on you and becomes a new friend.

Oh, by the way, I later happened to learn the name of the same white-haired gentleman that unknowingly became my inspiration and silent mentor because I ran in a 5K with him. For the first 4K he was ahead of me. It was only within the last klick that I pulled even and passed him.

If I did not pass him in that 5K race I might seriously consider quitting running altogether because I also learned his age from another fellow runner that knew him pretty well.

He was 84 years old and he is till running up and down my street. God bless him.

Enzyme Supplements for Digestion and Health

April 26th, 2008

Most people understand the concept of vitamin and mineral supplementation, however not many grasp the fact that these are the raw materials and not the workers for implementing health.

Indeed, the nutritional supplement industry surpassed $150 billion in sales during 2004. However, without the enzymatic workers, the continued prevalence of degenerative diseases and chronic conditions continues despite the supplement pill popping taking place nowadays.

Enzymes are the workers in your body that help digest your food, regulate your organ function, fight viruses and bacteria and repair cellular damage.

In an interview with enzyme expert Dr. Edward Howell in his book Enzyme Nutrition, he describes the effects of depleting your body’s enzyme bank as, “…one of the paramount causes of premature aging and early death. I also believe it’s the underlying cause of almost all degenerative disease.”

Dr. Howell continues, “To begin with, if the body is overburdened [in supplying] enzymes to the saliva, gastric juice, pancreatic juice and intestinal juice, then it must curtail the production of enzymes for other purposes. If this occurs, then how can the body also make enough enzymes to run the brain, heart, kidneys, lungs, muscles and other organs and tissues?”

According to Dr. Howell, “This ’stealing’ of enzymes from other parts of the body to service the digestive tract sets up a competition for enzymes among the various organ systems and tissues of the body. The resulting metabolic dislocations may be the direct cause of cancer, coronary heart disease, diabetes, and many other chronic incurable disease.”

Enzymes are the workers in your body that help digest your food, regulate your organ function, fight viruses and bacteria and repair cellular damage. And when you research the most highly regarded digestive enzyme and probiotic (friendly intestinal bacteria) formulators in the world, Michael O’Brien always ranks at the top of the list.

Your body is not designed to deplete its own enzyme stores to digest your food. In a perfect world, the food contains most of the enzymes necessary for digestion. Unfortunately, due to processing, cooking, contamination, etc. most of the enzymes in food are destroyed. So your body is forced to pull enzymes from other areas, like your organs, to promote digestion.

This is why you feel tired, sluggish and bloated after a meal. The longer it takes for an enzyme to breakdown the nutrients in your food, the more enzymes will be pulled away from other metabolic functions in your system.

That’s why it makes sense to upgrade your diet to include plenty of raw fruits, veggies, seeds, nuts and grains. And supplement with vibrant, electrically active enzyme supplements like our favorite here: enzyme supplement

To Market to Market: Why Content is King

April 26th, 2008

Perhaps it was the dot-com hype or perhaps barriers to entry on the Internet are just way too low. Whatever the reason, intelligent and otherwise successful entrepreneurs continue to throw money at websites as if they were buying billboard spots on the strip in Vegas. And more often than not, placing good content on those sites is an afterthought.

It shouldn’t be. Here’s why:

Your website’s content defines your product.

Your website’s content is your location.

Your website’s content supports your price.

Your website’s content promotes your offerings.

In short, your website’s content is a microcosm of all things marketing. Your content should be the heart and soul of your web-based business unit, even if that unit is part of a larger offline framework.

There is a common denominator amongst all people buying something on the ‘net: they want relevant, timely information and they want it now. When a searcher lands on one of your business pages, it is because he either a) typed in your URL with a purpose in mind (to seek relevant information in a quick, efficient manner) or b) clicked over to your URL with a purpose in mind (to seek relevant information in a quick, efficient manner).

You cannot escape this dynamic, nor should you try by building a site around funky graphics, fascinating color schemes, or excessively long “resource” (i.e. links) pages. Searchers and the search engines they rely on are not looking for this kind of pseudo-content. Without the presence of easily retrievable and highly relevant information (read: “good content”), all the charm and good looks in the world will not make a website perform.

Creating good content takes a little sweat and a lot of dedication. Better rankings and more qualified traffic will not happen over night. However, the following time tested methods will help you build a content rich site that, in the long run, will bring traffic that is willing to spend:

1) Think about ways to make your site “sticky.” Produce or syndicate content that is useful, current, and demonstrative of your unique capabilities or offerings. Be sure to address your target market’s information needs in a way that is not easily duplicated. Write articles, give away a useful download authored by you or a colleague, or teach a skill. You will establish your credibility as an experta must on the weband enjoy more repeat traffic as a result. In turn, your target market will get to know you better and trust you more.

2) If you have time, motivation, and a love of writing or journaling, consider publishing a blog. However, I give this advice with caution because it islike so many things on the Internetvery easy to start and even easier to forget about completely. But if you are disciplined enough to post thought-provoking commentary on a regular basis, blogging may be your ticket to good content. Everyone from nine to ninety is doing it, and there is a good chance your target market is too.

3) As your mother said, you can’t please everyone all of the time. The answer: niche! When you target one or two highly specific markets, everything you do online has more impact, mainly because you get to know your audience more intimately. Think in terms of easy market researchspecialty forums and blogs abound. In turn, creating relevant content and sales copy will come more naturally and help you avoid the hard sell.

4) Even if you choose not to formally optimize your website for the search engines (although I hope you do), spend a few bucks and do some keyword research over at Wordtracker or KeywordDiscovery (.com). Then use your findings to brainstorm ideas for building relevant content. The idea is simple: give people what they want and they’ll keep coming back to you for more.

5) The search engines’ single most important goal is to return relevant content to searchers. That content is returned in the form of links to individual pages. Therefore, the better you are at mapping relevant content to strong themes on each of your pages, the better you will do in the rankings.

6) Do not write just for the search engines if you publish articles. Indeed, utilize key terms in your copy if they flow easily and are topically appropriate, but resist the urge to use articles as a vehicle for spamming. The search engines don’t take kindly to this; nor will your visitors appreciate your obnoxious writing style. Authenticity will take you a long way down the path to creating excellent content.

These exercises in targeted content building will jump start your Internet marketing success, forcing you to constantly review your offerings and the way you communicate their benefits and features. By staying on top of the content game, you stay in touch with your target markets, and that is always a win-win proposition for anyone trying to get noticed on the world wide web.

Medical Malpractice: 10 Reasons Why Most Victims Won’t Recover a Dime

April 24th, 2008

Despite popular opinion about the “skyrocketing” increase in malpractice suits and awards, the number of suits has not increased since 1996, and in most cases, plaintiffs receive nothing. There are a variety of reasons why patients do not recover any compensation for injuries suffered while receiving medical care. Most of these issues stem from general misconceptions about medical malpractice. It is important for potential malpractice victims to understand these issues while seeking counsel to represent their case.

1. Patients don’t know they are victims of medical malpractice.

Studies show that roughly 2.9 to 3.7 percent of admitted hospital patients suffer some sort of preventable injury as a result of medical management (i.e., not from the original medical condition). Even more management-related injuries occur outside of the hospital. These injuries are a result of a physician /administrator’s affirmative mistake, or that person’s failure to act in a particular situation. Types of mistakes include errors in diagnosis, use of automated materials, and inappropriate delay of treatment.

However, one of the most common errors occurs with administering medication. The Massachusetts State Board of Registration in Pharmacy estimates that in Massachusetts alone 2.4 million prescriptions are filled improperly each year, the majority of which involve providing the wrong strength drug, or the wrong drug altogether. Each layer of communication introduces another opportunity for error. Improper diagnoses and negligent supervision of trainees are other common errors, and both have led to disastrous results in many cases. Up to 98,000 patients are killed each year as a result of preventable medical errors, the eighth leading cause of death in the U.S., yet only 10,000 cases of malpractice are filed each year. In the vast majority of cases, however, the fact that a poor medical outcome was caused by malpractice is hidden from the patient.

2. No autopsy was ever performed.

Remember that we must prove both carelessness on the part of the doctor or hospital and that the carelessness resulted in death or injury. In a medical malpractice case that results in death, it is extremely difficult to prove that the death occurred because of the malpractice without an autopsy. This is because there are so many reasons why a person might have died, but we must prove that at least one of the reasons for the death was the negligence of the doctor or hospital.

3. A physician’s poor bedside manner does not constitute negligence.

In the vast majority of cases, even egregiously poor bedside manner cannot be considered in determining whether a physician was legally negligent in providing treatment. We have reviewed many cases where arrogant doctors provided care and the patient was injured. It just doesn’t matter legally that the doctor was a jerk. We must prove, with expert medical opinion that the treatment departed from good and accepted medical care, and not bad bedside manners, that caused injury.

4. The patient suffered no significant damages.

As we noted above, the legal system is not set up to handle small medical malpractice cases. We decline hundreds of cases a year where it appears that the doctor was careless but the resulting injury is not significant. A pharmacist may incorrectly fill your prescription, and you might get sick for a few days. If you have a good recovery, however, you probably don’t have the basis for a case. That’s because the costs of pursuing the case will be greater than the expected recovery. Our Court system may not be perfect, but it does act as a filter to keep out all but the most serious cases of medical malpractice.

5. The physician or hospital’s mismanagement did not necessarily cause the injury suffered.

As discussed earlier, it is very difficult to prove that medical wrongdoing was the reason why the patient suffered the injury that he or she received. The insurance companies have many standard defenses including, for example, that (1)The injury was an unforeseeable consequence of the initial condition/injury, (2)The injury was due to the patient’s non-compliance with prior medical advice, (3)The risk of the patient’s particular injury was a known, recognized, acceptable risk (acceptable to whom?), (4)Some other party was responsible for causing the injury, or (5)The injury was caused by a previous illness or disease.

Medical malpractice claims must show that the doctor’s substandard care, more likely than not, was a substantial factor in causing injury.

6. The injured patient has not retained an experienced attorney.

The world of medical malpractice claims is a world unto its’ own. It has its’ own special rules and laws. We believe that it is imperative that an experienced medical malpractice attorney or an attorney that is ‘teaming up with’ an experienced malpractice attorney represent you.

7. The statute of limitations has expired.

This is the time a person has to start a lawsuit. The time limit is very different for a city, state or municipal hospital than it is for a private hospital or doctor. One reason that you should consult an experienced medical malpractice attorney early is to determine when the statute of limitations expires in your case! DON’T LET YOUR TIME RUN OUT without knowing your legal options!

8. Jurors have been biased by the insurance industry.

The insurance industry has spent millions of dollars funding research to suggest that there is a widespread problem with respect to medical malpractice suits. These studies claim that excessive verdicts are causing malpractice insurers to raise their premiums, forcing physicians out of the medical profession. It has been proven that increased medical malpractice premiums have nothing to do with lawsuit verdicts! Even the American Insurance Association has said that lawmakers who enact “tort reform” should not expect insurance rates to drop! Jurors who hear the insurance company propaganda then award less of a verdict than they would normally have deemed appropriate. Unfortunately, after the verdict is reduced on appeal, malpractice victims often receive less than is necessary to pay their medical bills for treating the subsequent injury that was caused by the malpractice. Even your doctor probably believes that by capping, or reducing damage awards, this will cure all that is ill with the legal system.

Nothing is further from the truth. The medical malpractice insurance companies are in business to make money. Not to pay out money. The more they pay out in claims, the less profit they and their shareholders take home. I have always asserted that if the doctors wanted satisfaction in reducing their inflated premiums, they should look no further than their own malpractice insurance companies. By demanding rate reductions and by threatening to obtain coverage elsewhere, the insurance companies have to realize that their rates must be re-evaluated. Also troubling is why physicians have not banded together to open competing insurance companies in order to obtain reduced rates.

9. The injured patient is unable to hire good qualified medical experts.

You cannot win a malpractice case without a medical expert. A good expert who is willing to testify can be hard to find. It is becoming increasingly difficult to find doctors who are willing to stand up for what is right and to right a wrong. It takes time and money to find the best experts for your case. This is one area where insurance companies have an advantage. If they have a case that is particularly bad for their doctor, they may show the case to many experts before they find one to support the defense (or concoct a defense). They can afford to hire many experts. Most plaintiffs cannot afford to have ten experts look at their case in order to determine which expert will work ‘best’ for them.

Increasingly, doctor’s professional groups are now attempting to bring claims against doctors who testify against other doctors. These claims seek to revoke the doctor’s board certification or punish the expert doctor for testifying for a patient. This has happened recently in the field of neurosurgery and obstetrics and gynecology. The potential threat of professional repercussions for testifying on behalf of a patient will significantly inhibit many doctors from helping injured victims in seeking justice and proper compensation.

10. Juries like doctors.

Folks sitting on juries rely on doctors when they’re sick. They trust their doctor. Their family uses the doctor. The doctor has trained for many years to learn their specialty. How can the doctor be faulted for something that would have happened even if good care were rendered? Fighting a malpractice case is an uphill battle. But, with proper information, the right facts, the right experts and an experienced attorney, you stand a much better chance of knowing the risks of taking your case to trial.

Why You Should Discourage People From Reading Your Sales Copy

April 23rd, 2008

A common mistake you may be making in your advertising: Using vague statements in an effort to please everyone (while connecting with no one).

When dealing with new clients, I often receive this comment back, “Oh, if we say that, it will turn off so and so.”

Many people, when marketing their business, feel it’s crucial they don’t discourage “Mr. So-And-So” from buying from them. This is strange, because usually Mr. So-And-So is far from their ideal customer. Or he might make a fine customer, but he’s not so near to buying as Mr. Prospect.

I recently wrote an advertorial directed at unemployed people. I found out that 80% of the people this agency attracts are immigrants. So in the headline we stated…

Cambridge Immigrants Finally Find Jobs They Love

What about the other 20% who were born in Canada? We could try to pull back the focus. Include everyone. Something like…

Cambridge Residents Finally Find Jobs They Love

I doubt a struggling East Indian or Italian immigrant will not feel as pulled to that revision.

In fact, the entire advertorial we put together focused on the typical situation that occurs for 80% of the immigrants to Canada… They have high credentials. They come here. Their credentials aren’t accepted. They end up working as a telemarketer or at some other low-paying, high-stress job.

The interviews I conducted with the agency’s current clients confirmed this with riveting details. I used one of their clients’ stories as the lead-in for the advertorial.

Compare that to the ad they ran the year before, which simply stated, “What are employers looking for?”

By concentrating on a particular sector of your target market, you’ll be able to speak in their language and show empathy for their specific situation.

Also…

By choosing the most “hungry” part of your market,
you will have an easier time making a sale.

In a website I’m putting together for a custom framer I do this. Her most ready-to-buy customers are women 40-60 who have personal keepsakes they need framed. The entire site speaks to them in that voice, using stories and benefits that resonate with their main issues.

So how to go about putting this into your copy?

First, determine who are the most ready-to-buy, while representing a large percentage of your target audience.

Then conduct interviews with them. Find out what their situation is. How your services/product can help. How you can connect with them better.

Next take the invaluable information you gain from those interviews with the target market and translate it into a overt offering which you send back to the target market.

You see, your customers are your leading sales experts. Get to know them well.

A Short History Of St Patrick and His Irish Holiday

The history of St. Patrick’s Day, which started out as a Holy Day for the Irish Catholics in the 10th or 11th century, goes all the way back to the late 3rd century when a small boy was born in Roman England by the name of Maewyn.

Maewyn and his family lived in a small town where his father was a soldier in the army, and a member of the town government. Some accounts say that Maewyn was an agnostic and some say that his family was Christian, but weren’t very strong in their faith. Either way, it doesn’t really matter because it was what happened later in his life that gained him his notoriety.

When Maewyn was only 16, there was a raid on his village from Ireland, in the Irish Sea. They captured Maewyn and many of the villagers, and took them back to Ireland as servants and slaves for the local Irish.

It was here in captivity that it is reported that Maewyn accepted God, and began to talk to him. In fact, legend has it that he often spoke to God in prayer up to one hundred times a day. And Maewyn was under the authority of a Celtic family, so he learned the Celtic language and how to speak it fluently. Six years later, when he was 22, Maewyn escaped from his servitude, and ran to France. There he joined a monastery and under the direction of the Bishop of France, he studied the Bible. It was this Bishop who gave him the name Patrick. Legend has it that while Patrick was here in the monastery, he heard angels calling him back to Ireland.

After spending 12 years in the study of theology and Catholic Laws, he departed and went to Ireland to preach to a heathen nation. He spent 30 years in evangelistic and missionary work across the land. He won many converts over, healed people, and it was even said that he raised some people from the dead. Everywhere he went he announced God, and he built many schools and churches to help promote the Catholic religion. Legend has it that angels followed him everywhere, and even told him where and how to go.

After 30 years of missionary work, he died on March 17th. This is the day that has gone down in history as St. Patrick’s Day, for the patron saint of Ireland.

St. Patrick’s Day today has grown into much more than just a Holy Day for Catholics. Strict Catholics around the world though do remember St. Patrick, usually in an early Mass on March 17th. But everyone joins in as a celebration of St. Patrick’s Day and becomes Irish for the day. It has now become a celebration of spring with parades special Irish meals, green tinted drinks and beer, etc. “The wearing of the green” and the Leprechaun have come about over the years to be Good Luck and prosperity to all and everything green typically represents the turning to spring - green is the color of life.

So, with one day to be Irish, take advantage, and have a wonderful St. Patrick’s Day.

Viatical Settlement Providers

April 21st, 2008

A viatical settlement involves the selling of a life insurance policy by a terminally ill person to unrelated investors who can be private funding companies or brokers. These companies or brokers buy the policy at a reduced rate based on the face value of the policy. They pay a lump sum amount of cash to the seller and on the person’ demise, they collect the death benefits. Grim as this may sound, if the transactions take place in a fair manner, the viatical settlements can provide relief to the terminally ill person in terms of easing the financial strains, which may other wise compound the physical and emotional trauma the person is undergoing.

Viatical settlement providers are the investors who buy the settlement policies. The New York State law makes it mandatory for these providers to be licensed. So if you are looking for a potential buyer of the life insurance policy, you must make sure to check the license of the company or the broker. It also makes more sense to sell the policy to a funding directly rather than through a broker, because the broker may or may not keep your best interests in mind while finalizing the deal. This is because the brokers usually get a percentage of the death benefits from the viatical purchaser companies. Also, before settling on any company, do contact a few others to get the best competitive rates.

In addition, you must keep in mind that you get the full cash payment at the time of sale. Don’t ever agree to partial payments and payment on installments. Your viatical settlement payment should exceed the cash value of your policy. Otherwise the better option would be to surrender your policy for its cash value.

You must check with your insurer if the policy contains provisions for accelerated death benefits. Before selling out, you can also consider options such as reverse mortgages. Most of all, do not give in to pressure tactics. Try to bargain for the best possible rates.
