Four Great Games Under 10 Megabytes

May 30th, 2008

Tired of expensive games on multiple CDs that take forever to install? Try these - they’ll take only a few minutes to download and the download is free.

TwistyTracks (MumboJumbo)

TwistyTracks is a charmingly whimsical game where the player turns sections of track, linking a railway in order to collect treasure, including gems, coins, and treasure chests. The game has 2 distinct modes: action-oriented Arcade and Realm Tour, where the player travels through five fantastic, unique realms as they recover treasure that was scattered afar by a mighty whirlwind… Treasure-packed bonus levels add another appealing twist to gameplay. The style is fanciful and fun- colorful scenery and eye candy abounds, and the game exudes a cheerfulness that’s downright infectious.

SnowballRun (SnowBallRun)

In SnowballRun you have to guide the snowball-riding penguin on a bold adventure through 75 fish-packed levels to a frozen homeland. Sounds easy? It’s not. You have to roll up and down ramps, around curves and obstacles, and over jumps for an exciting challenge that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Granted, it’s highly unlikely you’ll master SnowballRun from the very first try, but practice makes perfect.

BudRedhead (Space Ewe)

BudRedhead takes a page from classic side-scrolling games such as Super Mario Brothers and Sonic the Hedgehog. Admittedly, BudRedhead has a flimsy story and hackneyed plot. But this simple little gem is fun, and it has the perfect setting. You make Bud jump and run through imaginatively crafted levels chock-full of goodies to collect and foes to either avoid or dispatch. You vanquish your foes by using a pair of nifty antigravity shoes to bounce on them. Some of the levels and pitfalls, however, are challenging to the point of frustration.

AlphaBall (Dekovir)

Alpha Ball is a totally 3D entry into the Arkanoid/Breakout genre, featuring simple controls and addictive gameplay. Each level has built-in, completely 3D backward and upward functionality, with great graphics and effects. The application also features the new Suspend Game feature that lets you quit a game and return to it later. The program has 100 levels, with random level matching.

Ten Easy Tips For Improving Your Online Poker Game

May 30th, 2008

When you play poker online, you have options available that you don’t have at the card room or at your regular home game. Taking advantage of these extra options can improve your online poker results. Let’s take a look at some things you can take advantage of when playing your poker online.

1. Choose the Right Site- Simple, huh? Play at a site where you feel comfortable. Find a site where the competition is soft and plentiful. Find a site that offers the games or tournaments you are looking for. Finding the right site is a matter of personal preference. Check out several sites and find the one that’s right for you.

2. Choose the Right Game- Take advantage of your online poker room’s lobby. Most lobbys list such basic information as flop percentage, number of hands played per hour, and average pot size. You can scout the different tables from here. Also, if you have a buddy list; you can search for players that you know to be weak.

3. Have a buddy list- If you play regularly, you’ll see some of the same players again and again. You should quickly be able to tell the tendencies of many players. When you find a player whose game you can exploit, put him or her on your buddy list. You’ll find plenty of “buddies” if you pay attention.

4. Pay Attention- When you play online it’s easy to become distracted. Very easy. Let’s see… there’s e-mail, the baseball game you’re watching out of the corner of your eye, the phone, the kids, the dog. And, since all you have to do to play online is to just fire up the computer, it’s easy to play when you are distracted or tired.

5. Play Only When You Are Prepared and Rested- Imagine what an advantage you would have over your average opponent if you just followed this rule. Many players play online on a whim. Maybe they’ve been online for hours and just impulsively click on their favorite poker site just to unwind. Likely the only thing that will be unwinding is their bankrolls. So give your playing sessions a little bit of thought before you play.

6. Play for only a Set Time or Specific Number of Hands- Don’t fall into the trap of “just one more hand” syndrome. Before you start determine a specific time limit or hand limit to give your game focus. Playing for just one more hand has a way of turning into many more hands. And, if your playing with a just one more attitude, I doubt if you’re paying much attention or taking any notes.

7. Take Notes- This is a great way to keep your focus when you’re not in a hand. Develop your own shorthand for keeping notes. For instance, I might write, “CC w/ junk” (cold calls with junk) if I’ve noted a player who continually comes in for two bets with hands he shouldn’t.

8. Use a Four Colored Deck if Available-Why wouldn’t you. The online card icons are much smaller than real world cards. It’s easy to mis-read a club for a spade or vice versa. If changing to a 4 colored deck saves you from making one mistake, it’s well worth the time it takes to change.

9. Adjust the Chat Feature- Make sure this is set to your preferences. Maybe you like the chat. It keeps you involved and you pick up tells from others chat. Great, leave it on. But if you find yourself in anyway distracted, turn it off. Many sites also let you turn individual player’s chat off.

10. Avoid the Auto Functions- If you sometimes use the auto buttons to “Raise Any Hand” when you’re strong or “Call Any Hand” when you have a good draw, good observant players will pick up a tell on you. Best practice is to always wait for your turn and try to take the same amount of time to make your play.

There you have ten tips to help your online poker play. Some take a bit of effort. Some just require a one time adjustment of your options. All are pretty simple. But I believe if you follow them, it will help your online game.

Chatterbox - The Bird Who Wore Glasses

May 30th, 2008

Remember the Batman movies? Well, the movie producer of successful movies like these and entertaining children’s television shows such as Where on Earth is Carmen Sandiego?, Michael Uslan, has released this adorable children’s book. Chatterbox - The Bird Who Wore Glasses is available in a durable, hard-cover format with a lovely cover sleeve that will help prolong the life of the book. At 40 pages and full of excellent illustrations, this book is sure to entertain children.

Sad, red-headed Nancy doesn’t fit in well with the other kids who call her “Nancy Nobody”. She wished and wished for a new friend and one day the dream came true when a feathered, sight-challenged friend flew her way. Nancy felt needed, she was loved, and her world was set right by her new funny bird.

John Steven Gurney, a very successful artist and illustrator, colorfully illustrates the large pages with plenty of things to look at. Written in playful, light verse the author does mention things like prayer and “God’s love”, there fore it may appeal to a religious audience.

The book includes a CD with 2 songs and the orated version of the story by actress Brittany Murphy (voice of Luanne on King of the Hill, also known for her parts in Clueless and Up Town Girls). This could certainly appeal to the independent child who wants to “read” the book themselves. As well, the CD option may provide a few extra minutes for busy caregivers. The bullying shown in the beginning of the story, though very minor, may be useful for building empathy in the classroom for lonely and segregated individuals.

Children with family pets, especially birds, would definitely enjoy this book. Also, kids that are just becoming used to either themselves or someone they know who has recently gotten eye-glasses.

Chatterbox - The Bird Who Wore Glasses is actually the first book in a series by the author Michael Uslan. Check out the website for the book at: www(dot)chatterboxthebirdwhoworeglasses(dot)com

Use Trade Show Magicians to Fill Your Booth with Prospects

May 29th, 2008

Trade show magicians are one of the many ways to build booth traffic and separate your company from others on the floor.

At a trade show you not only have to compete against your competition’s sales reps but also you have to compete against all the ‘attention-grabbing’ strategies they use.

Louder doesn’t always mean more traffic.

One thing that really draws a crowd IS a crowd.

If you want to build a small crowd that grows larger, consider how magic works on people.

It is irresistible!

Even better, a good trade show magician understands his (or her) role on the floor and works for you to build an interested, feel-good crowd.

If you are planning to use trade show magic to draw a crowd . . . and it will, then you need to go one step further.

Just doing magic for the audience that will build in your booth is not enough.

You have to have a plan!

There are really two things you have to do to make this not just a good strategy but a great one.

First.

You have to find a way to engage people during or after the magic to find who they are. Look at your booth layout, train your staff and create some sign up tools.

But in some way you have to take advantage of the fact a large crowd has stopped at your booth.

Second.

You must ensure your key marketing message is incorporated into the act. Trade show magic is not really about entertaining people, although good magic does just that. People in good moods are easier to approach and build rapport with.

But this is a chance to add that EXTRA piece of having a larger group hear your key marketing message.

This will work great if your trade show audience is as laser-focused as your target market.

For example, if your target is dentists, and you are at a dental convention you don’t need to spend much time qualifying to discover if you have a dentist in front of you or not. They will be.

But if you are at a technology show, you may be talking to anyone from the VP to a programmer so you need to find out who they are.

So take this chance to get your message to your audience. A special offer at the end would do the trick.

Spend the time BEFORE the show during your planning sessions (you do do planning don’t you?) to use trade show magic to go to the next level.

What is Bipolar Depression?

May 29th, 2008

Around 10% of all Americans suffer from some form of depression
during their lives. If you did your research you’d find that
almost all developed countries around the world suffer from
similar statistics.

Depression in general affects the way we behave from our
sleeping patters up to the way we think and live life.

Here are some signs you should look out for: * Insomnia *
Headaches * Eating and digestive disorders * Lack of motivation
* Lack of concentration * Fatigue

Depression has many types and sometimes therapist can get them
mixed up with other forms of depression. One of the most severe
cases of depression is “Bipolar Depression.” Some people believe
that Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Bipolar
depression are closely related and can sometimes confuse
therapists.

The difference between depression and bipolar depression is in
the severity mentality and behaviour. A person suffering fro
bipolar depression is said to have manic episodes. It’s a severe
episode and will repeat itself four times in ten years on
average when untreated. The manic episodes can be predicted
because it usually runs in a cycle that is distinguishable to
each character.

Today’s scientists believe that bipolar depression is strongly
related to genetics. It is also said that bipolar depression
occurs in adolescence or in early adulthood and may continue
throughout life if untreated.

Treating Bipolar Depression

The most current treatment is very effective in treating bipolar
depression. However in most cases due to the mood swings they go
through, they often turn towards drugs and alcohol abuse to
suppress their state. This maybe lead to loss of job, marriage
issues, social issues and more.

Most bipolar depression patients on treatment often discontinue
with their treatment or don’t comply by them. While patients are
in their manic episodes, some of them feel comfortable in this
state of mind and this is a serious problem with their
perception and can often distort their behaviour causing more
problems in the future.

Someone on bipolar depression often lack the ability to
concentrate and think in a logical way and often run the risk of
no complying with their treatment and turn to drugs and or
alcohol and could turn into an addict.

In conclusion it is strongly recommend that anyone with bipolar
depression starts and continues treatment if they have already
seen their doctor. It can affect a person’s entire life and
change it upside down if they let it.

Peninsula State Park in Door County Wisconsin - My Idea of Paradise

May 28th, 2008

My husband and I are fairly new at camping. We’ve only been doing it for four years but we already have a favorite place that we make sure to go every year. That place is Peninsula State Park in Door County, Wisconsin.

If you look at a map of Wisconsin and look at the thumb-like piece of land on the right hand-side of that state that jutting out into Lake Michigan, you are looking at Door County. Door County, Wisconsin is a 75 mile long peninsula. Peninsula State Park is located in Fish Creek, Wisconsin which is about 55 miles up into the peninsula. The entire area is beautiful and picturesque. But in my mind, the best place in Door County is Peninsula State Park.

Peninsula State Park is owned and operated by the State of Wisconsin. The park is 3,776 acres and has almost 7 miles of undeveloped shoreline. The scenery within the park is breathtaking and varied. Besides the beautiful shoreline, there are forested areas, meadows, a beach for swimming, wetlands, and rocky bluffs. The park even has a popular 18 hole golf course that needs to be booked several months in advance if you want a tee time during the busy summer months.

There are also miles of hiking and biking trails in the park; a 75 foot tower that can be climbed for breathtaking views of the area; a nature center; a historic lighthouse that is open during the warmer months for guided tours; two sand volleyball courts on the beach; a tennis court; several camping areas; picnicking areas; sightseeing areas; a pier for fishing; boat launch areas; an outdoor theatre that you can see performances at from about the middle of June to the middle of August; and numerous signs explaining the history of the area. There is even a cemetery inside the park.

In addition the park owns Horseshoe Island, one of several islands adjacent to the park. People can boat, canoe or kayak out to the island and hike it if they wish, but people have to bring their own boats to do so. Overnight camping is not allowed on the island, but it’s a beautiful daytime destination.

Wildlife is plentiful in the park. During every one of our trips there we have seen deer. This year during a hike we came within about 30 feet of a mother deer with her two fawns. This year we also had a woodpecker about 10 feet from our campsite that liked to make lots of noise pecking away at the trees.

There is so much to do and see within the park a person could spend several days, or even weeks, inside the park without doing the same thing twice. During our first five day camping trip there a few years ago, we only left the park once. The rest of the time we enjoyed ourselves hiking, biking, sightseeing, sitting by our campfires at our campsite and cooking over our campfire. Our campsite had a view of the water and had a spectacular view of the sunsets. It was a great vacation, and as a bonus I lost a couple of pounds because of all the exercise I got!

The past couple of years we’ve ventured outside the park more often and have done fun things in other parts of Door County including visiting some wineries and indulging in wine tasting; taking a ferry over to Washington Island at the northern tip of Door County; visiting other Door County parks; visiting some orchards; enjoying a couple of festivals; and renting mopeds at the edge of Peninsula Park and driving them around the park.

The camp sites are a good value. Even with electricity and a water view (there’s an extra fee for water view and electric sites) a campsite at Peninsula State park is less than $20 a night. If you want to camp in the summer, plan ahead. Even though the campground has over 450 camp sites, it fills up quickly and is often booked solid.

Changing Landscape of the NHL

May 28th, 2008

Changing Landscape of the NHL

The changing face of the NHL is very prominent as the first
regular season play begins for the 2005-2006 season. Big named
players have left big named teams for the previously has-been
doorstops of the NHL. It is amazing that sports like baseball
have not seen the light, and it is unfortunate that hockey had
to learn this lesson the very hard way.

We now have players like Paul Kariya playing in a market where
there are only 1.2 million people. For Kariya, though, it is a
great move. Nashville has some talent on its team, and embedded
coach, and a decent place to live. Money is going to go a lot
farther in Nashville than it did in the extremely pricey Anaheim
or even Colorado. On top of that if Kariya has a few good years,
then he has a golden ticket for the rest of his life in
Nashville. He will be a celebrity way past the end of his
playing days and will likely never have to pick up a check there
ever again.

It is amazing the spending spree teams went on that previously
would not spend an extra nickel to buy new uniforms. Teams like
the recently bankrupt Pittsburgh Penguins, hanging by a string
Edmonton Oilers and the previously mentioned Nashville
Predators, are just a few who have had the flexibility to make
moves. On the opposite side of the puck you have the established
dominant teams like Detroit, Colorado, New Jersey and New York
who are facing a significant crisis due to previous signings.

The bottom line is the players cut of the pie dropped
significantly, some 25% in some estimates. However, the result
is going to be better for the league, the teams and ultimately
the players. Having more teams capable of competing for more
players, even with the caps in place is going to be good for the
league. Baseball should take note.
