October: A Month of Personal Harvest

May 3rd, 2008

October is hands down my favorite month. Every year l look forward to a visit to Lynd’s Fruit Farm in Pataskala, Ohio. My husband and I get in the car on a crisp day and take in the leaves displaying their glorious colors as we travel the country road. Once we reach the farm, I pour through bushel baskets brimming with gourds and Indian corn, wander the pumpkin patch, and pluck ripe apples from the trees. In addition, I reflect upon the hard work that was put in months before by the Lynd’s in anticipation of this one month of autumn abundance.

This month, why not have a personal harvest?

Step 1: Reap

The farmers have been working for months to get their crops in peak condition and are now ready to reap their produce. How satisfying it must be to finally be rewarded with excited children picking out the perfect pumpkin for a jack-o-lantern or seeing a family pick their own apples.

Even non-farmers need a time to stop and relish in their successes. Take time to enjoy the fruits of your labor. Reflect upon the hard work you have put into your life. We can get discouraged when looking at how far we have to go. Instead, look at how far you’ve come.

Ask yourself - What have I accomplished in the last week? Month? Year? Write down you answers so that you can see just how voluminous your response is.

In our fast paced society, it can be easy to always ask “What’s next?” But stopping to celebrate our successes can be invigorating, providing the enthusiasm and energy needed to tackle that next project.

Step 2: Share

Famers offer their harvest to others. It could be that extra tomato given to the neighbor or acres of soybeans sold for profit. Either way, the produce must be used or it has no value.

Now look at you list of accomplishments.

What have you learned that you can share with others? How can the things you have “harvested” be used to serve the community — either on a volunteer basis or for profit? Regardless, there is value in what you’ve reaped.

Happy Harvesting!

The Most Affordable Cosmetic Dentistry Procedures

April 16th, 2008

There are a lot of new, dramatically effective procedures in cosmetic dentistry. There are remarkable new products and technical procedures that have advanced recently to make dental services affordable and possible to more people than ever before. If you wish to have your teeth repaired, now you can have the treatment at an affordable cost.

At present, cosmetic dentistry is able to brighten, fill-in, shade, align and even replace teeth with the use of remarkable techniques and materials. When you have a healthy smile and attractive teeth, all the other benefits will follow. Improving your self-image encourages you to maintain good dental hygiene and at the same time improves your overall health.

There are so many dentistry procedures that are affordable. One is touch-ups. The yellow and brown stains and the white spots can be improved with touch-ups. The asymmetrical gum contours and uneven edges in your teeth can really make your smile look terrible. Simple corrective cosmetic dentistry procedures can change it dramatically.

The asymmetrical soft tissue contours can easily be corrected in just a single office visit. This requires minimal local anesthetic. Frequently, the symmetrical appearance of your gums can be as much as 50%of the total cosmetic value of your front teeth. This can be seen in the smiles of the young patients where their gums are displayed a lot when they are talking and smiling.

The super dark and super white spots can be reduced within one office visit as well. The acidic-micro-abrasion scrubs are affordable and helpful in clearing these problems. These unattractive spots can be safely removed with just one visit to your dentist using this technique, and the good thing is that it does not require the use of anesthesia.

The easiest way to a dazzling smile is through teeth whitening. This can be done at home or at a dental office with tray based bleaching products. If whitening is done in the office, it’s easier and more effective than doing it at home. Also important is the condition of the teeth and if the whitening used comes from a good brand name.

There are dentists who give their patients bleaching kits that they can take home. These kits usually work faster than the ones bought over the counter because they contain stronger amounts of whitening agents. Also the trays are custom fitted which helps to avoid gum irritation from excess whitener resting on the gums.

Cosmetic dentistry has dramatically changed the way teeth are improved. With the arrival of newer and more efficient treatments to whiten teeth, our smiles can now look (and feel) better than ever before. Cosmetic dentistry procedures are the best help in keeping up a great looking, healthy smile.

What You Need to Know About Hair Tonics

March 25th, 2008

The boom in alternative medicine has not passed by the market for baldness ‘cures’: there are now more tonics available than ever, with advertising shouting of ‘natural’, ‘herbal’ and ‘aromatherapy’. Many people’s first response to hair loss is to purchase a tonic, and it is always possible that, from amongst the vast and varied range of tonics available in the shops and by mail order, you might be lucky enough to come across one that does some good. Many, however, make wildly exaggerated claims, which they ‘prove’ with testimonials and ‘before and after’ photographs with changes of angle, exposure and even hairstyle to create a false impression of hair growth.

Scientific proof requires controlled double-blind trials - that is, trials in which one group uses the product and another uses a placebo, and neither they nor their doctor knows until the trial is over which they used. Of course, we do not generally require such a high level of proof before we make everyday decisions (nor are double blind trials easily applied to testing the individualistic prescriptions of much alternative medicine), but given the price of some tonics it is a good idea to question what ‘proof’ means in their advertising: it may mean little more than that the advertising standards people haven’t caught up with this one yet!

If in doubt, you could contact the company asking for more evidence to support their claims. Testimonials may, of course, be falsified, or selectively edited; in any case, many types of hair loss can cure themselves spontaneously, and even the loss leading to male pattern baldness can stop for a few years of its own accord. If the treatment being sold involves rubbing the scalp, or requires more frequent washing, it may be this rather than the product that is having the beneficial effect - hence the use of double-blind trials.

Before you buy a tonic, check the ingredients (mistrust any that insist on the secrecy of their formula) and see whether you cannot in fact produce something similar at home for a fraction of the cost. Also check whether the tonic actually claims to promote growth: many ‘tonics’ contain alcohol (though it may be hidden - for example, herbal tinctures are made with alcohol), which has a drying effect that may irritate more sensitive scalps and coarsens the hair; these are in fact simply intended as a sort of emergency shampoo. Unfortunately, although alcohol does dissolve the oils that make hair greasy, it does not remove them, merely spreads them along the hair shaft - which is unlikely to improve the appearance of greasy hair. Dry shampoos are a better alternative. Other products actually adhere to and thicken individual hairs rather than stimulating any new growth.

Hair Color Trends - The New You

March 19th, 2008

Current hair color trends are defined within the move towards relaxed glamour. Healthy, shiny hair, with lots of movement, yet still well groomed. Color is defined - it’s either pastel blondes, in clean, icy tones. Or cool browns, or brilliant reds. The move has definitely been away from red browns, although if that’s a personal choice, or suits your skin tone best, don’t be a slave to fashion!

Here are some ideas to incorporate the latest hair color trends into your style:

Double sided coloring - underneath, choose a darker color like chocolate, and over the top, and for most of the hair, choose lighter shades like copper and bronze. The darker color will frame your face, and if you go for any flicks or curls when styling, you’ll see it contrasted against the lighter colors. But the main colors when hair is straightened will be the lighter ones. It’s great for variety.

Try color combinations like coffee, honeycomb and golden syrup for a more subtle, layered effect.

For brunettes who like their chocolate browns, try a few golden highlights to break up the block of chocolate, unless your face and skin color can handle the density of such a rich dark color. It really helps define your hair style, and is much easier to wear.

If you like very dark colors, try a brown black instead of a straight black. Or get your hairdresser to mix in some blue black into the brown black to give it more intensity, but without the harshness of a solid black that is not flattering to all skin tones. Also, try mixing in some caramel and pink-red foils with a violet brown black base. If they’re used creatively, and with restraint, you can keep the overall look very dark and mysterious, with a few hints of color showing.

For blondes, try mixing golden blonde with a very light ash. Or for a more subtle but contrasting look, have the ends of a bob colored a pale pastel coral.

If you want to try platinum shades, instead of going for a harsher white white, try a softer platinum white tinted slightly with pink.

For a pretty natural blonde look, try splicing a few clove and light ash foils through a pale, golden base shade.

Redheads: Go for a rich, fiery copper with a darker brown underneath, like clove. This works well on long hair and mid length hair.

For another red combination, try cayenne, nutmeg and paprika.

For really vibrant colors mixed with a darker base, away from the coppers, try a pink red combination of cassis and raspberry coulis.

For something a little more outrageous and individual, go for a brightly colored fringe, say in pink, and a few purple ends.

If you want something quite striking, but not so colorful, just go for a lighter than usual highlight. As long as it’s tastefully done, it’ll look great. Don’t try this at home!!!

When choosing colors, be aware of whether it’s a warm shade or a cool shade. And keep in mind how much of each color is going to be on your hair. Which shade, or tone, do you want the dominant one to be? Do you want a subtle effect, or a more striking one? Unless the contrasting color is going to be in small amounts, keep warm tones together, and cool tones together, irrespective of whether they are blond, brown, black or red. For example, chocolate brown highlights look good with warm vanilla, even though the colors themselves are quite distinct.

You can use different tones together. But it depends on both your skin tone, the way the colors are applied, and how much of each are used. If you’re going for this approach, think of the contrasting tone as a painter would, and be judicious about it’s placing.
