Man from Nepal, 74, oldest climber to conquer the summit of Mt Everest

“Chomolungma or Mount Everest this year became a political pawn,” he said with some frustration.

This season European alpinist Anthony Loeff is reporting the scales for Mount Everest after he reached the summit of Kilimanjaro in Tanzania earlier this year.

Andrew Brash last attempt resulted in the rescue of Lincoln Hall, an Australian climber who was left by his team in the “death zone.”

More than 3251 people have climbed to the summit since it was first conquered in 1953 by New Zealander Edmund Hillary, who died in January, and Nepal’s Tenzing Norgay.

Bahadur Sherchan and four climbing guides reached the 29,035-foot (8,850-meters) summit of the world’s highest mountain early Sunday, said Ramesh Chretri, an official with Nepal’s ministry of tourism.

They basically coerced the Nepali government to not allow any climbers past camp two on the Nepali side. With the Chinese preparing for the impending summer Olympic Games, Bahadur Sherchan noted that the government’s actions hardly reflected the Olympic spirit.

The changing face of the NHL is very prominent as the first
regular season play begins for the 2005-2006 season. Big named
players have left big named teams for the previously has-been
doorstops of the NHL. It is amazing that sports like baseball
have not seen the light, and it is unfortunate that hockey had
to learn this lesson the very hard way.

We now have players like Paul Kariya playing in a market where
there are only 1.2 million people. For Kariya, though, it is a
great move. Nashville has some talent on its team, and embedded
coach, and a decent place to live. Money is going to go a lot
farther in Nashville than it did in the extremely pricey Anaheim
or even Colorado. On top of that if Kariya has a few good years,
then he has a golden ticket for the rest of his life in
Nashville. He will be a celebrity way past the end of his
playing days and will likely never have to pick up a check there
ever again.

It is amazing the spending spree teams went on that previously
would not spend an extra nickel to buy new uniforms. Teams like
the recently bankrupt Pittsburgh Penguins, hanging by a string
Edmonton Oilers and the previously mentioned Nashville
Predators, are just a few who have had the flexibility to make
moves. On the opposite side of the puck you have the established
dominant teams like Detroit, Colorado, New Jersey and New York
who are facing a significant crisis due to previous signings.

The bottom line is the players cut of the pie dropped
significantly, some 25% in some estimates. However, the result
is going to be better for the league, the teams and ultimately
the players. Having more teams capable of competing for more
players, even with the caps in place is going to be good for the
league. Baseball should take note.

How To Prepare For A Golf Tournament

Preparing for a golf tournament, as golf instruction explains,
is one of the keys to playing your best golf. If you play in
golf tournaments, develop a pre-tournament routine that prepares
you for the day ahead.

One challenge when preparing for a tournament is time. You might
not have much before teeing off, so make sure you get to the
course early as possible. A pre-tournament routine gets the most
of the time you have and lets you work on a lot of things in a
short amount of time. Structure in practice is something that
golf lessons preach anyway.

Many routines start with stretching. It warms you up. It helps
prevent injuries. And it loosens the muscles. Many golf tips
describe stretches you can incorporate into a sound stretching
sequence.

Include stretches that focus on those muscles receiving the
greatest stress during your swing. Target areas are your trunk,
thighs, arms, shoulders, neck, and back. The sitting trunk
rotation stretch and the shoulder-and-thigh stretch are two good
stretches to include in your routine. These stretches may not
lower your golf handicap, but they will help you avoid some
common injuries as you get older.

A pre-tournament routine also includes time on a practice tee.
Before hitting, take two or three clubs from your bag and swing
them a few times, just as many golf tips suggest. This exercise
warms you up and prepares your muscles before hitting a ball.
Next, start hitting balls. Begin with a wedge to get a feel for
your swing, then move to a mid-iron. Work on swing technique
while you hit the wedge and mid-iron. Concentrate on your swing
trigger, if you have one. Approach it the same way you would
your golf lessons.

After a few minutes of working on your swing, start hitting the
ball. Imagine yourself out on the course and in a specific
situation. Use your pre-shot routine. Visualize each shot. And
hit it as if the shot counted. Note the distances you hit each
shot that day. Knowing how well you’re hitting a club helps
during the tournament when it’s time to choose a club.

Select specific targets and try to hit them. It’s important to
play target golf, even on the practice tee. In fact, play target
golf whenever you hit a golf ball, unless you’re working on a
specific swing fault. It helps you get the most out of each
practice session, as many golf lessons explain.

Work on those shots that you might encounter during the
tournament –punch shots, fades, and draws. Practice any type of
shot that you think might help during the tournament. Hit a few
of each. Use the same techniques emphasized in golf instruction
manuals.

Finally, a good pre-tournament routine includes putting. The
star drill helps you get the most out of your time on the tee.
Find a hole on the practice green that has a slight slope to it.
Then take five balls and spread them in a star pattern around
the hole about 3 feet away. Practice putting from this distance.
Them move the balls out to 4 feet, always keeping them in the
star pattern.

By spreading the balls out in a star pattern, you get the most
common putts you’ll face on the course. Pick out a target line.
Visualize the ball going in before putting. Then putt the ball.
Do it just the way golf lessons recommend. Also, try lagging a
few long putts, just to get the feel for it. Spend about 15 or
20 minutes putting, if you have time. There are other drills you
can use in place of the star drill. The key is finding one that
works for you.

Golf lessons tell you to keep your head down when putting. Use
your pre-tournament routine to work on keeping your head down on
putts 5 feet or less. The earlier you look up on short putts,
the more likely it is you’ll miss. Many professional golfers,
including Nick Faldo, wait until they hear the sound of the ball
hitting the bottom of the cup or know the ball has definitely
missed the cup before looking up. It’s a good way to force
yourself to keep your head down.

Another challenge when playing in a tournament is that you might
be playing a course for the first time. If that’s the case, find
someone who has played the course and ask him or her how it
plays. Find out as much information about the course as you can.
That knowledge will help you during the tournament. Actually,
this is good advice anytime you play a new course. Good course
management can help you lower your golf handicap.

Playing in golf tournaments is fun. It’s a chance to play
different formats and different courses, ones you might not play
otherwise. It’s also a chance to play against golfers with a
variety of golf handicaps. To play your best golf, develop a

Although Highland Park is a very old golf course compared to the very modern Poplar Creek, a recent restoration of the former by a leading architect has brought about more similarities to add to the already existing extraordinarily beautiful landscapes that the two have always enjoyed.

Highland Park is no doubt the oldest golf course in the state of Alabama having been established in 1903. It actually opened as the Country Club of Birmingham.

Still, in 1998 the course went through a vigorous restoration by well know architect Bob Cupp. The work of Mr Cupp had the desired effect of enhancing an already beautiful course that had stood the test of time. Highland Park still sparkles from that restoration today.

The layout of the Highland Park golf course may seem rather short but is actually very competitive. One can even go as far as saying that it has the characteristics of a championship style golf course. It also makes good use of superb bent grass greens and the beautiful landscape and view of downtown Birmingham.

Poplar Creek Golf course on the other hand is a popular golf course, especially for groups and organizations. This is a course consisting of beautiful, large undulating greens with rolling fairways lined by almost a thousand mature trees. The course also boasts of 5 rock edge lakes complete with two waterfalls and streams.

This golf course has a new 12,000 square foot clubhouse that includes a Pro shop, Restaurant and bar as well as banquet facilities that can comfortably accommodate 200 people in a special event or function. Now more of us own televisions than we do a phone.

The highest known annual earnings for a TV star were paid to American comedy star Jerry Seinfeld.He was given an amazing $1000000 for each episode. The series lasted 8 years and although this fee came into play in about 1997 this still makes Jerry the highest paid TV star so far.

The CLF Revisited - Great Excitement

Last week I wrote an article criticizing the Canadian Football League (CFL) for signing NFL players who’ve been suspended for violating the NFL’s drug policy. I also criticized the league for allowing the Rouge (When a field goal is missed and the ball can’t be returned out of the endzone, the kicking team is awarded a single point).

I think I was a little too critical by calling the CFL “Bush League”. For the most part, the CFL provides great excitement from its talented players. I remember having season tickets to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. I really miss those days, when I was yelling, screaming and cheering for my beloved team in blue and gold.

I remember the days of Joe Poplawski, Trevor Kennard, Joe Cameron, Willard Reeves, Chris Walby, James West, Michael Grey and others. These guys were great athletes and the fans loved them.

This past week, I’ve been having debates with a friend of mine who was offended that I called the CFL “bush league”. Like me, this friend now lives in the United States but unlike me, he has remained a CFL fan.

These debates allowed me to revisit my youth and my love for the CFL. It has allowed me to be true to my past and embrace all the things that were good. The CFL is definitely one of those good things.

The CFL is a great game and I want to mention the things I love about this league.

1) The best thing about the CFL are the fans that brave sub zero temperatures (10 to 15 below Celsius) in late November to cheer on their teams during the playoffs and Grey Cup (The championship game).
The CFL only has two domed stadiums: The Skydome in Toronto and BC Place in Vancouver. So weather really does have an effect on the fan.
CFL fans are some of the most dedicated and loyal fans.

I remember braving those temperatures to cheer my Bombers in the Western division playoffs against the dreaded BC Lions and Edmonton Eskimos. The Bombers are now in the Eastern Division.
I remember one time the Bombers actually beat the Lions in the playoffs and the scorekeeper typed “BC Sucks” on the scoreboard. What a memory. The poor guy was fired after the game but remained a hero to the fans of Winnipeg.

2) The size of the field provides tremendous excitement. The CFL Field is 110 yards from endzone to endzone. The Field is 65 yards wide. This allows for a lot of action. There’s a lot of exciting plays because of the size of the field.

The endzone is 20 yards deep, so the excitement continues even after a team has driven the ball past the 20 yard line. This makes the game truly exciting.
In the NFL many teams are prevented from scoring as they approach the endzone. Teams don’t have enough room to move the ball into the endzone. In the CFL, there’s tons of room for an offensive player to make a play and score a touchdown.

3) 3 downs and out. Yes my friends, the CFL only has 3 downs. This means that the CFL is a passing league. Go figure, a football league with excitement. If you’re like me and love a passing game, the CFL is it.
I was a Marino and Elway fan because they played on teams that focused on the passing game. This type of quarterback is a dime a dozen in the CFL.

You can’t survive in the CFL if you can’t pass the ball. Three down football is exciting and takes remarkable skill, A quarterback has to move 110 yards down field with only 3 downs per series. WOW! What action.

The 3 downs coupled with the #4 below puts the fan on the edge of their seat from the opening whistle to the last second of the game.

4) The 25 second game clock. The only way to waste time in the CFL is to drive the ball. You must continue with an offensive drive to keep the clock running. The play clock and 3 downs doesn’t allow you to take a knee with under 2 minutes to play, like in the NFL.

The last two minutes of a CFL game can provide multiple scores. It’s exciting football for an entire 60 minutes.

These are the things that made me a CFL fan in my youth. While I still love the NFL, maybe it’s time to go back to my roots and watch some Canadian Ball.

Running After 50 - My Story

I took up running in my late 40s after looking hard and long at a picture taken in New York City during a family vacation, a picture in which I truly did not like the way I looked.

Out of shape. Tired. Overweight. Neglected. Dark rings under the eyes. No juice. And that big belly which I didn’t notice before… hmmm…

Clearly, dieting and exercise was the only way out. But dieting has never been something I was very successful at. So that left me with the only other option available - exercising.

But what kind of an exercise? I felt too old for a lot options and almost for all team sports. I didn’t have too much spare time either.

It had to be something that I could start doing right away without much preparation or driving around and would then allow me get back to my daily routine with the same ease.

As I was meditating on the issue, as luck would have it and as it usually happens by divine arrangement in situations like this, my eyes happened to fall on this very elderly gentlemen, easily in his 70s and perhaps even more, RUNNING past my window with a stilted but comfortable gait!

I pressed my nose to the glass to take a second look just to make sure I wasn’t hallucinating or anything.

Nope, the white haired gentleman was slowly but surely inching his way up the street where I lived, looking smart in his great looking sweat shirt and pants and matching jogging shoes.

I was embarrassed in a way. If this guy could run in that very advanced age, what excuse did I have for self-pity and inaction?

So that very same evening I did what I always do before embarking on a new project - I hit the bookstore.

While perusing the racks of books and magazines I found what I needed. The latest issue of the Runner’s World magazine which had a 10 week startup program for the absolute new beginners. I checked it out while still standing there in front of the magazine rack - it was built around a “walk 2 minutes and then run for 2 minutes for a total 10 minutes” type of idea.

Certain that I could walk and run in 2 minute intervals, I purchased the magazine right there on the spot.

While driving back home I almost ran a red light because in my mind I was already off and running like a cheetah up and down gorgeous hills and mountains and across all over God’s green earth. Boy, was I ready for some glory.

The next morning, with my old plastic watch strapped to my right wrist, and wearing my almost brand spanking new running shorts and jogging shoes, I was out in front of my house, feeling really nervous and excited like a little kid about to join a new game.

The first 100 yards I thought I was doing fine until I was stopped in my tracks with an excruciating pain that stabbed me on the side. And that was the end of my first “run.” I walked back home holding my side and cussing at myself for failing in my grandiose “becoming a runner” project.

Was this for me really? Was I going to be able to run, ever, for 2 MINUTES straight for god’s sake?!

The next morning I did not feel any better when I saw the same old gentleman cruising past my house, this time in an even better-looking jogging outfit.

In ten minutes I was out again, making it past the 100-yards mark and welcoming the familiar side-stab at about 200 yards. But I felt I was doing it. At long last, yes, I was exercising, one killer side-stitch at a time.

Let’s fast forward to a year later…

My runs were now always over the 30 minute mark and I was running like 3 or sometimes even 4 times a week. I was feeling great, lost some weight (not a lot though) but in general I was really feeling charged the way someone throws off a switch in a dark room and turns on the lights. The sensation of renewal was really remarkable. The fact that my wife also commented on how better I looked and how she was also inspired herself by my new routine made the rewards even sweeter.

Since then running became truly an addiction for me. I can now run for over an hour at a slow comfortable pace and easily do four or five miles at a stretch. When I feel rested and especially energized, like perhaps once every other week, I also combine some after-run sit ups and bicycle-kick crunches for some extra conditioning.

Within the past few years I’ve even participated in a 5K and 10K race with mediocre times nothing to write home about (33″ and 72″, respectively). But I feel peaceful, strong and about 20 pounds lighter. I know I probably have another 20 pounds to go but it is a process. An up and down process that I’ve learned to manage.

Some days I feel tired and ragged, and I’ve learned how not to force myself on days like that because, thanks god, my body does not care for my ego.

I’ve learned to respect my limits and not to injure myself. So I never got injured so far, knock on wood.

On those magical and rare days when I feel this inexplicable energy roaring out of nowhere in the third mile of a 5 mile run, I’ve learned to let it rip and open up downhill like a child while praying inward that my knees would hold up and not let me down for one more day.

I’ve learned to appreciate the beauty of running and all runners young and old, fast and slow. I’ve learned the proper form to run efficiently and how not to be arrogant when I saw fellow runners with bad-form, and how not to be upset when those same runners with bad-forms easily left me reeling in their dust.

I know what a privilege and blessing it is to be able to run. I cherish it with an almost religious reverence. I’m truly grateful. I remember all those who cannot run even if they wanted to for one reason or another and I send them all my heartfelt silent prayers. I hope they are accepted.

If you are already a runner, I’m sure you’re already familiar with my experience. And if you are not, first of all let me slip in the obligatory caution that I’m not a doctor and I strongly recommend you see your doctor before undertaking any exercise program, including running.

But having said that, I heartily recommend running for everyone, within their own limits and capacity. Take it very easy at first. Walk a minute, and then “run” for 30 seconds, if you need to. There’s nothing wrong with that. Who said you need to run like Alberto Salazar as soon as your New Balances hit the ground?

It’s all about circulation and sweating out the toxins. I think running is unique in revving up our circulation to its maximum and that’s why it’s got so many health and psychological benefits. But that deserves another article of its own.

Do it and you’ll like it. And the more you like it, the more you end up doing it, no matter how old you are. That’s how this positive addiction grows on you and becomes a new friend.

Oh, by the way, I later happened to learn the name of the same white-haired gentleman that unknowingly became my inspiration and silent mentor because I ran in a 5K with him. For the first 4K he was ahead of me. It was only within the last klick that I pulled even and passed him.

If I did not pass him in that 5K race I might seriously consider quitting running altogether because I also learned his age from another fellow runner that knew him pretty well.

He was 84 years old and he is till running up and down my street. God bless him.
