How Credible Are You On The Web?

June 1st, 2008

Over 40% of Internet users believe that only half the information on the web is accurate. Government websites are trusted by over 70% of people while fewer than 10% find pages posted by individuals to be credible. These are results from a survey carried out by the Center for the Digital Future of the Annenberg School at the University of Southern California.

The message here is loud and clear: your website has to overcome a lot of suspicion and cynicism.

Here are some easy-to-implement ideas that will help bridge the credibility gap.

1. Include full contact information on every page, including address, and a telephone number. If possible use a number that’s answered by a live person. Stay away from Post Office Boxes: it can look as if you’re hiding behind an anonymous address. If you want to use a different address from your physical location, consider a using a company that gives you a street address.

2. Add a foto to your site. A picture makes you seem familiar to your visitors. When they’ve visited your site a few times, they’ll begin to feel that they know and trust you.

3. If you have a clear brand off line, use it online to continue the familiarity and confidence that people have already developed offline.

4. Include testimonials: anything another person says about you is many times more powerful than anything you could ever say about yourself. Ask your best clients to write a few punchy words about their experience with you.

5. Make sure all the content on your site is up to date and accurate, especially if you’re in a field where information changes often or where there are frequent new developments.

6. Take down the page announcing last month’s teleclasses (I’ve been guilty of this one myself!) Otherwise it looks as if noone’s taking care of the site.

7. Don’t overdo bold, italics or other special formatting. It can quickly make your page look “hypey.”

Now it’s your turn: check your website and see how it measures up.

Direct-To-Plate Printing versus Digital Printing

May 22nd, 2008

Direct-to-plate and digital printing have been used by people
for a long time now in printing low quantity but full color
printing jobs. This full color but low quantity type of prints
are the ones done in CMYK. Since many printing companies have
quotas in thee print jobs that they cater to, these types of
printing have become most useful for those works that fell below
the required quantity. These types of printing are created to do
just that. What is the difference between these two?

Direct-to-plate printing is also known as the computer-to-plate
printing. This printing does just that, from the computer
directly to the plate. In the traditional printing, film is
produced to the image setter and then to a metal printing plate.
The plate then goes on to the press and used to make the printed
material. In direct-to-plate printing, the printing plate comes
directly from the computer file which does not anymore utilize
the use of a film. The production of films has been known to
cost a lot money and consumes time even in the printing of small
quantities only. That is why this type of printing became
popular especially for those who want to save time and money in
producing low quantity projects. The only weakness
direct-to-plate printing has is that in not using films while
processing prints, you cannot anymore check or proof-read these
prints before printing. You can only get a digital proof that is
close to that of the film proof but not exactly of the same kind.

Digital printing is considered as closer to color photocopying
than to printing. In digital printing, the prints are made
directly from the computer file without using films or plates.
This method is best useful in printing lower quantities and
customized prints compared to those of the direct-to-plate
printing. As with the first type of printing, this can only
print in CMYK files. Just like in photocopying, you get to pay
the same price for the same quantity. Digital printing is the
most effective way in having quality prints in the most
affordable way. This printing style can even give photocopying a
stiff competition in getting it in colors.

There are more ways of full color printing now that is best
capable to the kind and the need that people have in printing.
With these technologies, printing is made more affordable and
easier to do. It is now up to the people to decide which is best
suitable for their printing needs. They only have to pick their
choice.

Are These Online Data Backups Important To You?

May 20th, 2008

Total Wiped Out! Disappeared! Vanished!…these were the words
from one of my friends when one of his online databases had been
hacked into and caused a total havoc to his online business. All
his mailing lists, data files and valuable information
pertaining to his e-commerce were lost beyond recovery, simply
because he overlooked the importance of regular backup.

These days, database-driven websites are just as important as
the business itself. All the customer data, transaction
information as well as your mailing lists are stored in database
format. Popular ones are the open-source database called MySQL.

But the main problem here for all the home business owners
especially is that they would tend to rely on their web hosting
to provide them the so-called reliable hosting. The fact is,
most of the web hosting in general on the internet are just as
fragile as you could expect. Ever heard of just many of the poor
websites been hacked and corrupted by the unscrupulous hackers,
for example?

While we can’t really totally prevent these hacking from
happening, it is therefore crucial for you to be able to take
your own preventive measures to periodically backup your website
databases. Here are some of the reasons why a database backup is
important to your business.

Maintain minimal site downtime There are times when you
would want to switch to another hosting for your websites, but
the hassle of contacting your hosting for the help on backups
and restoration of your databases can, at times be a major set
back for you. That is why, once you’ve figured out and got used
to backing your database, duplicating your database into another
one can just as easy as you want it to be. The point here is to
consistently backup your database so that you will be able to
restore the data back without causing a huge delay or site
downtime. Remember, the longer the delay, the more money you’ll
lose.

Reduce risk of database wiped out With the advent of
immense technologies and tools available to the potential
hackers, hacking into your websites and causing havoc to your
business should prove to be a peanut for them. There are bunch
of automated online tools or systems available which could
backup your online database periodically, thus freeing yourself
from the worries of the having your database wiped out someday.

Reduce workload from the server Surprisingly, most of the
website owners that I know of perform their website testing and
fine tuning using their web hosting as their test bed. Since
this method can take away some bandwidth and increase your
server workload, with your backup file on hand, you could
perform the same task on your own local computer just by
restoring the backup file. If you are using a phpMyAdmin as your
database administration console, backing up and restoring the
MySql data is easy even for the beginners. At the end of the day
you could potentially reduce a huge amount of workload from the
server.

Protect Data Corruption All computer systems are not 100%
bug free. There are annoying times when your online system just
couldn’t perform the way it should be and you could be driving
nuts trying to find out what are the causes of it. It could
simple be your corrupted data in your database. If you have
backup data in place, you can just restore backup the relevant
tables which you suspect have been corrupted or you can even
restore the whole database if situation warrants. This should
essentially save you a lot of your time trying to debug your
online systems.

As a conclusion, knowing how to backup and restore should be
learnt by all the online business owners. Backup and restore
process can be very simple task for you to perform and once
you’ve got the knack of it, you can be rest assured of your
online database integrity and never to worry about losing lots
of money from your website downtime.

Usability and ROI: The Great Debate

May 17th, 2008

Consider this true story. As product manager flew overseas to demonstrate his ground-breaking software application to an executive team in a multi-billion dollar company. Halfway into his demonstration, he got lost in the application’s interface and could not navigate his way out. The executives dismissed him, with an admonition to go back and fix his problems.

For years, interface gurus have hotly debated the value of an application interface in term of return on investment. How much influence does usability have on an application’s ROI? Can a great interface possibly justify its expense? The answer is yes. Forward-thinking companies are finally realizing the importance of usability. “Usability is one of our secret weapons,” says a representative from Schwab.com. The fact that usability consistently produces positive results will not be a secret much longer.

A case in point: American Eagle Outfitters launched a redesigned, more user-centered Web site in March, 2001, and showed a 53.6% increase in sales the next month. Can that increase be directly attributed to usability? Usability research is limited in its ability to predict ROI simply because there are too many variables, leaving decision-makers skeptical of usability expenses.

Usability guru Jakob Nielsen argues that starting with usability is key to increasing ROI. He estimates that gathering usability data early in the development process is ten times more effective than late usability data. “It’s 100 times cheaper to make a change before any code has been written than it is to wait until after the implementation is complete,” he states, but admits that such estimates do not equate to a standard ROI. “The two parameters are measured in different units,” he argues, “Project cost is measured in money, and usability is measured in increased use, more efficient use, or high user satisfaction.”

Despite the paucity of strong evidence of ROI linked to usability, there is still a case to be made. Unusable products are unacceptable in the consumer-driven marketplace. “E-businessmen and women don’t always understand how all the aesthetic and technical aspects of a Web site must revolve first and foremost around the consumer, because without them, there would be no business,” reminds Richard Feinberg, Professor of Retail Management at Purdue University.

Jane Black notes that consumers are expecting exceptional usability because they’ve seen the potential available with “a high-powered PC and some imagination.” Not to mention Arthur Andersen’s study which revealed that 83% of Internet users would likely leave a Web site that required too many clicks to get to what they were looking for.

This extends to internal operations as well as e-commerce. A client of Brook Group, LTD, had the design firm create a more usable intranet. The old intranet made everyday tasks difficult and time-consuming. Since Brook Group employs usability experts focusing on customer experience design, the resulting application was not only highly usable, but highly profitable as well. After months of use, the client reported an increase in productivity and a corresponding decrease in support costs. Employees performed daily tasks faster and more efficiently, and some reported greater job satisfaction because of the improvements. The system was so easy to use that training time was cut in half, all of which results in monetary savings.

So how does a company integrate usability into the development process? Usability is both an art and a science. It requires a cross-functional team: trained usability professionals focus on strategic as well as technical issues. To maximize the potential benefits, consider usability at the outset, test extensively and incorporate developmental checks and balances to maintain the business objectives.

ROI is the primary concern for many companies, and many are realizing that there is a direct correlation between the usability of their Web sites and applications, and customer satisfaction levels. With the increase in user sophistication, usability has become a critical part of the design and development phase. It is no longer an additional expense, but rather an integral part of the entire budget. Companies are developing new applications at lightning speed, but it’s the “usable” ones that leave the shelves.

Trick #3: Make more money on shipping. When my wife sold on eBay about 80% of our profit was made from shipping charges. We kept our product prices low so they attract the buyer and charged a bit more on shipping. People understood and they always got a great deal. Market Your Storefront with a Website

March 17th, 2008

Many people think that the Internet offers a tremendous
marketplace, while others will question the extra effort and money to purchase and design a website. Some of the money-making values of having a website are summarized in the following paragraphs for your consideration.

1. If you have a local group of customers and want to
expand to the neighboring areas, states or even, countries, without spending massive amounts of costly advertising money or even leasing more company space, then the Internet can work very well for you. Niche markets (small groups of customers scattered about that are interested in a very specific item or service) also work very well on the Internet.

2. As a business owner, you need to provide a map and
directions to your store for your customers and enable them to look up specials, discounts, limited merchandise, or varieties and prices of each item you market. For instance, let’s say you sell cheesecakes and you would like to spend less time on the phone explaining the different varieties, how many people the different varieties will serve, prices, and availability. Here’s how this could work online for you. You would provide a secure, encrypted order form thereby collecting the person’s credit information as well as their address, phone, and email information. They would list their preferences as to varieties and sizes of cheesecakes. This form would be sent directly to your email or to your fax so that you would have the items ready for the customer to pick up that day or the day they designate.
You would have the cheesecakes shipped for those that cannot make it to your store. When a customer returns to order another product from your website, they would not have to fill out most of the form as it would already be in your database.

3. You build their confidence when you show customers that you have their best interest and shopping convenience in mind when you open a website and properly maintain that website with new and updated information. Customers will appreciate being able to read about the owners, the store’s policies, the service after the sale, and any other items you think would develop a rapport to allow them to do more business with you. Having a website allows your company to develop its style and branding and develops a sense of security for the customers in doing business with your firm.

4. A small operation can look just as important as a large
corporation. A website builds confidence and value into
your products and services and allows you to receive orders you may have missed without being on the Internet.

5. If you do advertising on the radio or TV, newspapers or direct mail, having a website gives the customer a place to review what you tell them in the ads in much more detail. Every ad should reference your website so customers can view the details at a time and place that is convenient 24 hours a day seven days a week. You can quickly change and update information on a website without the expense of printed materials.

6. You can do any promotion online that you can do offline and much cheaper. Coupons, money-off sales, discounts, employee recognition, limited merchandise you want to move, all these can be marketed on your website. Keeping the website up-to-date can be provided by your webmaster at a very nominal fee.

I hope that you can see from some of the above points that having your own website is necessary in today’s marketplace for any small or medium-sized business as well as any at-home business. Customers are out there looking for you and you need to take advantage of where they are looking and, right now, that is the INTERNET! Since your competitors have a website, they are perceived as being more up-to-date. The ease, convenience, special online savings, information about your company’s mission, your services, your ability to communicate with customers are all important reasons for having a dynamic online website. Online marketing will only continue to grow…WILL YOUR CUSTOMERS FIND YOU ONLINE?
